FOOC, 7th June 2012. I walked the Annapurna Circuit 20 years ago. Even then it was a bit of a tourist zoo, but I enjoyed it and wondered what had happened following subsequent road building. FOOC this week has a piece, starting 17'6" into the podcast. Worth a listen.

Thanks for that. I walked it about 1982. I think that it was the first or second year the Eastern part had been opened to westerners. That part had few tourists. However, once we got to Muktinath, as expected, there were loads of westerners. The Sanctuary had just a single tumble down shelter, I presume it's a holiday resort now.

Would it be churlish of me to point out that you were one of the exhibits!

Nah, there's always a pecking order of backpacker coolness - those who'd staggered in over the Thorong La, burned black and 10kg lighter due to giardiosis and dehydration, were on a higher plane than the tyros on the Jomsom pizza trail...

Real coolness applies to one of my mates.

Not a penny to his name, and no chance of a job in Thatchers Scotland. No safety net to fall back on.

I joined him for a few months in Europe, then went back to 'real' life.

He has managed to travel every continent, with a few marriages and prison terms along the way. I joined him in Greece for a 'job'. It involved hiring a tall car for the day. You drove into farmland with tall crops like corn. Every so often you would stop and stand on the roof of the car. You were looking for a patch of green-ness amongst the yellow.

Stealing the local Greeks hash plantation was a dangerous hobby!

The last i heard, he was living in Brazil.

Do you have to perfect a 1000 yard stare as well?

The 1000 yard stare comes naturally, Chris.

Real life gives you it.
