Wherever I pitch my tent...

... that's my home. (For a couple of days anyway).

Hi Folks,

Can anybody recommend any decent campsites up here in God's Country?* Doesn't have to be anything fancy, just one that isn't overrun by caravanners and has some nice hills close by. (Flat, dry and sheltered would be a bonus). I've looked on the web but most of the stuff I've found has been out of date, geared towards the "little house on wheels" brigade, expensive, etc. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. KD

Much as I love Scotland, god's country happens to be Yorkshire.
i'm sure I could recommend some sites, but Scotland's a massive place, where abouts did you have in mind?

same as Lloyd ref Yorkshire and the vastness of scotland
give us a clue where you're thinking of going

If you are going anywhere near Glencoe, then i can recommend a great campsite at Kinlochleven (£4 per night, clean showers/toilets, pub over the road and the campsite manager/owner is a helpful guy from Yorkshire (PROPER god's country).
Can't remember the name/GR, but could find it within the week if need be.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on the whereabouts of His country although Yorkshire IS pretty nice to look at. :-) My apologies for being vague, I didn't really have any specific place in mind. (I was at work at the time, hacked off and champing at the bit to get away).

Glencoe would be good (thanks Tony),up around Spean Bridge or across towards Newtonmore. Anywhere south of Inverness is within easy reach so spoilt for choice really.

I know it's not relavent, but could you possibly tell me what Newtonmore is like as a place? It's just that I thought it'd be a reasonable place to live, after a degree course, just for getting to know the Scottish mountains. A bit of a wierd question, but ask anyone here, and... damn, I even manage to insult myslef!

Well situated - easy to get to the Gorms / Creag Meagaih and the Ben / Glencoe. Not the buzziest place in the world, pub there used to serve Black Sheep, which is a huge bonus by Scottish standards. Er, I think you should go and take a look...

North of Glencoe (just a bit tho) there looked like there was a reasonable one at Spean Bridge (I think).

Oh, and Yorkshire is the real God's country

I know about the locality of it, I was eondering about the actual place itself... size, amenities etc. I will go and look for myself, but I can't really manage it, sor a while, as I don't know of anyone who's wanting to go just at the moment.

Andrew, have you looked at www.newtonmore.com? Should have all the info that you need right there.

If you're thinking of moving north of the border then I would've thought that Edinburgh or Glasgow would give you more in the way of job opportunities. Depending on your chosen career, obviously. Good road/rail access to the hills from either city. I've lived/worked in Edinburgh and also worked in Glasgow. Both great places.

James, aren't you a bit young to be getting involved in grown-up theological discussions? Don't believe everything they teach you bairns in Sunday school. (I thought Yorkshire was a county anyway. Can a county be a country? Probably not. I win).

We don't mean country in that sense you silly billy, in any case, it's not God's (he doesnt pay taxes (neither do I)) but for clarification:

Yorkshire is marvellous.

Doesn't pay taxes eh? Neither does Sean Connery. Do you think there's a connection?

And I agree, Yorkshire is marvellous.

I personally hate Yorkshire, but then it did bugger all but rain when I was there!

Yorkshire is sort of Ok
but its not the North
maybe North Midlands
North of the River Tees is the North.

If you're suggesting I am a midlander then don't open any internal mail for a while

ps
no offence to any real midlanders out there
also I think before the local authorities messed about with the counties the Tees was in North Yorkshire

1974, that was.
Sunderland was in Co. Durham,
we had the Yorkshire Ridings and
Berwick upon Tweed was in Milton Keynes.

I dont know if these are any help?

Or really cheap, if you buy your booze or food there camp free outside the Strathcarron Hotel (01520 722227)oops! no shower.

Bryan,

Yup, every little helps. Thanks. A couple of tips for anybody that's interested : I've found that if I do a Web search by putting a place name and then "camping" into Google, it gives fairly good results. Also, campsites along the West Highland Way, (and probably other LDPs) tend to be walker friendly and relatively cheap.

All I need now is for the weather to stop being so pish at the weekends. :-(

According to the Romans anything past the Trent was north - most people can't distinguish between a Derbyshire accent and a Yorkshire one or Manchester and Nottingham. And as for Yorkshire not being a country - have you never heard of the Peoples Republic of South Yorkshire.

Try the NT campsite at Glencoe the warden there when I last went was an all-round decent bloke, the showers and bogs were clean and the site was uncluttered. In contrast Red Squirrel was expensive, noisy, dirty, stony, cramped and the warden was a complete ar*e. I'd avoid that one if I were you...
