I'm flying out to Germany with Lufthansa- does any one know if I can take food that I've dehydrated with me? It's stuff like chili, beef jerky, fruit etc.

with no detailed knowledge, I am going to say probably not.

There will be airport regulations to watch out for

there will be airline regulations to watch out for

and

there will be German Department of Agriculture and Department of Environmental Health to watch out for. These two will certainly be interested in the meat content.

None of the above may apply, but you may have an awful lot of explaining and justifying to do to officials from all the agencies...so how long you going for?

Only a weekend haha. Maybe not then....

Given that Germany is in the EU I'd be surprised if there would be an issue if the stuff is packed in hold luggage.

its the local agricultural regulations I'd be most concerned about. Its about disease prevention - dunno about Germany, but I used to have to "report" to DARNI when I went back home, because I worked in the agricultural industry here in England. I had to prove I had left my work wellies at home.
There is also a long list of uncured and semi-cured meat products that arent allowed to be carried into N. and S. Ireland by the public.

You pass through the checks after you pick up your hold baggage at the other end...
If its for the weekend...potential hassle wise is it worth it

It shouldn't be a problem at all according to the rules on personal food imports

http://www.defra.gov.uk/food-farm/food/personal-imports/rules/

I know that's talking about bringing things into the UK, but on the parent webpage (same url without the "rules/" bit) there's a statement that "All EU countries have the same import controls as the UK."

As Matt states you should have no problem. I've been doing trips into Europe for 30 years and have never had any hassle - they don't care!

The only trouble I had was when a nice FDA woman threw my 'airline avoidance' ham sandwiches in a bin when I arrived in the USA.

Take what you want. That's what I always do. In fact, I'm doing exactly that tonight, on my way to a 'new' European country. Some non-EU countries have restrictions in place. I kept being told I couldn't take more than 3kg of food to Iceland over the past two summers. Huh... I took about 10kg of dehydrated stuff on two occasions, and about 5kg on another. You only have to see the price of food over there, and it drives you to be a 'criminal'. On my way from Thailand to the UK towards the end of last year, there was an announcement on the plane about declaring any fish products on arrival. As I'd been asked to carry about 5kg of dried fish for someone in the UK, and as the announcement sounded a bit severe, I thought I'd best go through the 'red' channel and come clean. When I said I had 5kg of fish, they asked if it was fresh, and I told them it was all dried, and they didn't even want to see it and just waved me through.
