Hi all

I am looking to go to Nepal in the autumn and have just had inocculations for the usual things, but am unsure about rabies.

Has anyone bothered to have the preliminary rabies shots before going or is it generally ok without?

thanks

Hi Steve

I am off to Nepal in December and I have been to my local Docs. She didn't recommend a Rabies jab so I am hoping she knows what she is talking about. Trekking trip planned by any chance??

yes, by chance.....

my doc asked ME if rabies was a problem!!!!

lonely planet guide says rabies is prevalent, but didn't seem to recommend one thing or another.

thanks

No need Adam, however you will see the notices to not feed the dogs if you are going up country as they will stick with you until you get your flight out?.

Check out the trailblazer guide if you have not already. I found it a lot more comprehensive than the Lonely Planet version. There is a web site which I will dig out the link for with up to the MINUTE information for all destinations with regards to vaccines. What trek are you doing? Are you going with a tour company?
Paddy, thanks for that I have heard the same so will stay clear of them. You sound like you are speaking from experience

Adam

thanks for that, I'll have a look.

I am intending to go to Langtang, Gosainkund and Helambu late September to mid October. Just intending to go with a guide and porter and teahouses.

How about you?

I'm afraid im being a bit of a steroetype and doing the trek to Kala Pattar / Everest Base Camp. Its my first time so i thought I would do one of the more popular trips. Like you though I will be hiring a Porter/guide and staying in Tea houses. I am thinking of maybe taking a tent and doing some camping too! Have you organised your guide/porter yet? I'm glad all the trouble over there has calmed down!

I have been wanting to go for quite a while now and until earlier this year was always intending to go to Annapurna (more stereotyped!!), until I read about the Langtang area which sounded less obvious, quiter and a bit culturally different being closer to Tibet.

I am really keen on photography, so stop quite often and in real terms trek quite slowly, so didn't want to be holding up or infuriating any groups or partners. Have a friend who would have been ideal to go with, but he is stuck with factory holidays in the summer....

Haven't booked anything yet, although have a company in mind in Katmandhu who I have been pestering for information and seem reasonably priced and ethically sound.

Just waiting a little while to see how things develop politically, but will probably book soon.

IF you bone up on options open to you,as sugested reading the bible of Trekking in the Everest region by Jamie McGuiness you will find a wealth of info?As for the use of a trekking company or guide unless you are planning on doing some side trips off the main trail you may not need hire at all?.i carried all my gear to include a 1.7kg bivi for some outstanding wild camps.you will meet loads of like wise people on the trails,Dec is a bit less crowded and does offer good weather. As for any info you need regarding your Trip i am more than willing to help with the above mentioned book plus maps E-MAIL ME.

Thanks Paddy
I have got the 'Bible' as you so correctly put it. It has made me so much more confident of going since I have read it. I am going with a friend and we both have a lot of hill walking and mountaineering experience behind us so we are 'considering' not hiring anyone at all. BUT we do want to enjoy it as much as possible and lighter packs would be a definate bonus. We are going 8th to 30th Dec exactly for the reasons you have stated. Not so crowded AND clear weather. How did you deal with the water situation out of curiosity? Did you take a purifier or treatment tablets?
Steve, just a word of warning the flights get a lot more expensive the nearer you get to going so if you haven't booked them yet i would do so ASAP.

Given that you will be in and out of tea houses the standards have been improved, however you do get the odd one, more so with the younger house workers who are a bit laid back?as for the water get it from the houses and make sure its well boiled,i just used to drop a puri tab in for extra.IF you are going up to BC the standards are good, when you get in to your over night stop check out the houses, more so the one that has smoke coming out of its chimney?I have always managed to stay well clear of a dose of the ?? a good tip is to use a good cleaning gel on your hands as and when.I Always stay at the kathmandu Guest house, they also do Airport pick up,its on the web.Have fun??

Is it safe to go out there now? as I was looking at a trip later in the year, but uncertain of the situation?

I want to do kala Pattar and ebc too, and have a couple of companies lined up in kathmandu with good prices.

Do you think its a going concern?

GO FOR IT! The troubles out there are on the down turn and most of them are in the Kathmandu area anyway which you will only be in for a couple of days. Have you considered going indepedently? Its a lot cheaper!

Hi Adam, have thought about it, but being a treking virgin, I didnt want to get to kathmandu nd waste time sorting return flights for lukla.
The companies out there I am looking at are a damn good deal compared to over here and I get a guided tour of the city thrown in, and if I use a guide i feel it would give me a better guide into the culture/people.
Your thoughts please?

I agree, It will be my first time too and have got several quotes from guides in Kathmandu which as you say are fantastic value compared to a group trek organised from here.

I agree about the increased cultural interaction too.
