The norwegian official mapsupplier Statens Kartverk has now introduced a new and better map series that will cover the entire Norway in about two years. The basis is the 1:50 000 scale maps that is already covering the whole country. The new maps will be bigger, one sheet will have four of the old maps. The maps are printed on both sides, so the amount of paper will be less. And also the new series will be available in plastic that is said to be both durable and may withstand water. The maps are also to have a 2km overlap, thus beeing more readable and more easy to use.

The first maps are said to be delivered the second week in 2012, in about a week or two in fact. So those of you that plan to visit Norway it is advisable to check what maps are available before you go.

The maps are also available as a download for android cellphones. But for old geeks and "map-aholicks" like myself I will stick to the version that one may view without the need of some batterydependant instrument.

Thanks Otto,

I was looking to buy some fresh maps ahead of a trip in March, so I'll make sure to check whether the new ones cover where I'm going. As things stood until now the Turkarts were pretty usable but having to use the standard mapping with the red covers was always a bit of a pain.

Do you know, has the actual mapping changed at all - is it a true update or just a repackaging? There has been quite a lot of development in some mountain areas in the last few years (e.g. around Kvitavatn). Also the current maps use a 20m contour and don't have symbols for crags or cliffs - is this still going to be the same?

For garmin GPS there are Norway topo premium maps available (20 regions). scale 1:20.000 (mostly the more populated areas) and 1:50.000 for the rest. So far only region 03 Oslo is available on the bad internet. countourlines are 10m or 25m depending on the scale. This is the best what's available on GPS for Norway.
