Walking in the Bavarian Alps

But only for 3 days

I'm going to be working in Munich for a couple of weeks soon, and I will be able to fit in 3 single-day walking trips, probably starting in Garmisch. I'm looking for some strenuous walking, hopefully going higher than any Munro, but nothing involving scrambling or climbing.

I've got a 1:35000 map called "Kompass: Wander-und-Radtourenkarte 07" which has contour lines but doesn't really come up to OS standards, and I've ordered a "Walking in the Bavarian Alps" by Bourne. Any ideas on other sources of info?

Any ideas on good routes? Would taking ice-axe and crampons be worthwhile? Do they have midges in Bavaria?

Thanks

I've never found any decent English language books for that area, but there are some excellent German ones which you could pick up once you're there. And check out this site.

The obvious thing to do in the Garmisch area is the snowdonized Zugspitze with its railway and restaurant. There are plenty of quiet walking routes to the top.
It's also a great cycling area, with plenty of books available. Garmisch is really only on the edge of the Alps, and if you go a little further south or east there is lots more to do.

If you have only three free days available, I'd think about devoting some time to non-walking activities. Berchtesgarden, Dachau, the Kehlstein, Salzburg, the Fernpass (cycling or driving) and Munich itself are all worth a visit.

Oh, and ice gear and insect repellant are not necessary

Thanks for the advice. On the subject of maps, it looks like the 1:50000 Bayerisches Landesvermessungsamt series are the most suitable - quite similar to OS Landrangers.

Berchtesgarten and Zell-am-Zee are worth a trip to. I echo Joans recommendations about Salzburg too. The castle is fantastic for views.

I went as a young teenager, about 15 years ago and if I recall correctly Zell-am-Zee even has a beach.
