Helvellyn via Striding Edge

Friday 30th March saw me take advantage of the recent good weather and tackle Striding Edge for the 3rd time. The other two were in good weather but a bit windy in places that kept me off the spine on some parts. This time though was certainly 3rd time lucky  No wind, sunny, warm and virtually no other people anywhere, even on the summit. The most perfect conditions on this classic ridge. I also took the time to visit White Side & Raise for the first time. A fantastic day in fantastic weather. The perfect end to summer

Nice report,

I have been up Helvellyn and Striding edge a few times and always enjoyed it. I checked out a couple of the other trip reports too

Striding Edge is more scary to the eye than it is tricky to the hand/foot. When its fog-free and you can see the fall its easy to actually walk it, when shrouded in cloud you can end up taking a series of all the worst possible rocky climbs when you can simply go around if you could see. The Edge to the north of it, Swirral Edge (or I think it should be called Squirrel Edge as more befits the feeling) I actually find harder its much more of "edge" feeling.

Thanks for your report. Some very nice photos. Would like to do Striding Edge myself someday, although I have to say it looks a bit like Crib Goch with middle-age spread

Would also like to try the Sharp Edge on Blencathra. Couldn't see a report on your blog. Have you done it? Do you have photos to share?

Thanks again.

10K star, thanks for the comments. Yes i have done sharp edge, twice, once in conditions like above and once in damp but not very wet conditions. Great scramble but as always, care need especially in the damp. It can get a bit slippy!!. No report on my blog as I only eset it up late last year. Here's a couple of photo's of sharp edge in good conditions

Sharp edge is best done in good dry clear conditions as it can get very slippy and unlike striding edge there isn't much of an escape path where you can stay off the spine ll the way. Having said that, care should be taken in all conitions at all times. Enjoy it if you do it as it's a great experience

Cheers

Thanks Andy.

Photo number 4 kinda resembles Y Gribin ridge (Snowdon, not Glyders), which I hope to do at the end of April. Maybe good prep for Sharp Edge?

Nice pics. Thanks again.

Not done Y Gribin so can't really comment but I guess anything that resembles it would be good prep.  That bit of rock is quite 'shiny' but note the slight path just incase

Cheers
