Two Day Trip.
OM won't let me upload photos at the moment. Here is a brief report. Full report and photos here.
A two day trip round the Carneddau starting from Cwm Eigiau. I startedby climbing Foel Fras via steep grassy slopes, as I couldn't find thepath on the ground. Once on the ridge Foel Goch and Carnedd Llewelynwere covered in mist. However, things improved as I moved along theridge. I nipped into the refuge at Foel Grach, my last visit there wasin 1982.
By the time I reached the summit of Carnedd Llewelyn only the top 100ftor so was misted out. I soon dropped out of the clag as I descendedthe SE ridge to Craig yr Ysfa. I climbed up from Bwlch Erol Farchog toPen yr Helgi Du. I had started getting cramp in my legs on the lastsection, so decided to stop there overnight.
In the evening the cloud cleared and there were extensive views, withvery little haze. There was almost no breeze and I was able to sitoutside the tent in my shirt. It was a perfect night, with bright moonand the odd shooting star.
On the second day I was up at 4:00am and away by 6:00am. I droppeddown to Bwlych tri Marchog and slogged up to the summit of PenLlithrig y Wrach. From here the route back was uncertain. My Harvey'smap didn't show any paths along the NE ridge. However, there was anobvious footpath leading in the right direction. This was indistinctin places and very, very boggy. I didn't want to go as far as MoelEilio, so decided to cut directly down to Hafod y rhiw. After a fewhundred feet of waist deep heather and a nasty incident when my legslipped between to hidden boulders, I found a path which lead me downto Hafod y rhiw. From there is was a simple plod along the track tothe truck.
Nice looking trip, I love that area. I've often thought the top of Pen Yr Helgi Du looks like a great wild camp spot but I've not got around to doing it yet. There is a small pool or two just as you head down the south ridge, so I'd aim to get my water from there with the help of a Drinksafe filter.
I noticed your final blog comment about another trip from Cwm Eigiau. I'd suggest looking at crossing over from Hafod y Rhiw SE to Carreg Wen and Llyn Cowlyd, and taking in Creigiau Gleision and Craig Wen before coming across to Pen Llithrig y Wrach. You can head up PLyW from the south, or follow the leet and access the south ridge of PyHD (or follow the fence along the W flanks of PLyW to reach Bwlch y Tri Marchog). Head on over to Llewellyn and Foel Grach, then choose between dropping back into Cwm Eigiau or picking up the track out from Melynllyn to the car park.
I think it's my third night out on Pen Yr Helgi Du this year. Maybe I should change my postal address Good idea about the Drinksafe, there are a few pools near the summit. Not sure if they would be there in a "normal" summer though. Thanks for the suggestion for another trip.
