More fractionally obscure Dentdale moorland. Well not really obscure because its very obvious from all over the valley:
Little trod on top though. In summary I'd call it well worth doing for the views, with a slight caveat that it seemed rather wet on top, despite it being August. I suspect it could be rather 'entertaining' in wet conditions, and it'd be very dull in cloud.
Started from Dent station, down then up via a few walls etc - there's no utterly trivial way to do that I think - then along the top until I hit the path down round long moor, then back along the valley (no hardship!).
No surprise to find the top abandoned, but slightly surprised how quiet even the dales way parts of the valley were actually.
In terms of views there's quite a good one of Baugh fell over Garsdale, although that one doesn't change fast! Over Dentdale there's Whernside/Deepdale/Combe hill all showing well to start with (too hazy for photos to have come out well), and plentiful howgills later.
The nicest bits are I think though, the point a bit past the summit where you can see Middleton fell properly. It really doesn't look quite like it belongs in the dales:
There is of course a good reason for that and its the Dent fault, the effects of which you can see very clearly slightly further on:
I'm not sure but I assume this is geologically roughly where the lake district starts? The upper reaches of Dentdale from here do in fact also look very little like typical Dales valley sides.
Anyhow here's a photo of my favourite bit of the Dee along the valley. It doesn't do dramatic, broadly preffering to hide underground. But that can have nice results:
Oh and a bonus, cheating picture of Barbondale in clear, sunny weather. From the other side too
