Very sad, but I wonder if it was the Tacul, rather than Mt. Maudit. There are normally many people on the Tacul, but only a few on Mt Maudit. Unless the guides have decided that the Gouter route is now too dangerous.

Word directly from an S&R team member is that it was definitely Mont Maudit, a HUGE serac came crashing down directly hitting one group higher up the face and triggering a large wind slab avalanche thought to have been 150m wide that hit a second group further down.

The death toll currently stands at 9 with more missing, three of the dead are thought to be Brits, two more are missing, no more info than that so far.

A few years back, I was due to climb the Tacul-Maudit-Blanc route in July. The day before the guide called it off due to avalanche fears. Gutted at the time, but when I saw this it made me remember that he did the right thing.

Some years ago a friend of mine was rescued from the Tacul. She was descending and was just above a big avalanche that killed several people. The PGHM lifted everybody off because of the risk of them descending through the area where the avalanche had fallen.
