Ben Nevis Camping.

I'm planning to go up to Scotland, primarily to go up Ben Nevis from Torlundy. I may even do the Cobbler the next day before heading home.

Ideally I’m going to drive up Friday during the day and need somewhere to stay Friday and Saturday. Can anyone recommend any campsites, or places where I can pitch the tent by the car?

Failing that I can sleep in the car and just need a quiet place to park.

Thanks.

the campsite in Glen Nevis is very nice, i'd certainly reccomend it, there's another behind the Lochaber secondary school thats also perfectly good.

assuming you've got a long drive, i'd recomend staying at either of these just to make it easy on yourself, climb the ben, get a decent nights sleep and then drive down to Arrochar in the morning. theres also a couple of good campsites around the north end of Loch Lomond and at Arrochar if you decide to drive down that way on the saturday evening to gve you a head start on Sunday for the Cobbler - BeinGlas farm (spelling?) and the forestry commision site at Arrochar leap to mind...

The Glen Nevis camp site is a nice campsite albeit a bit expensive as they charge per person, size of tent and for the car. The showers and washing facilities are good. Bit of a problem with midges though.

Enjoy your visit.

I have to admit I would prefer a site to stay on as it simplifies things.

Ideally I would like this as cheap as possible, at the moment it looks like its just me going up and the fuel costs are not great.

Do any of you know the name of the one behind Lochaber secondary school?

Thanks.

its Lochy caravan park. if you hit UKcampsites.co.uk and do a map search on Fort William it should pop up - its just to the north of the A830 at Lochyside - from recall there's a chippy in Lochyside near the road...

decent facilities, midges can be an issue by the river, nice views of the ben.

Thanks all. Chippy will be nice, are there any pubs near by?

Will make a few calls tomorrow, i suppose at the end of the day its wherever will take me at the last min.

Got my routes sorted, still trying to find some of my kit, but weather looks good.

I may do the Cobbler Sunday and then drive down to the lakes, for Striding Edge on Monday. Will have to see if the wife will be happy for me to be away most of the bank holiday, especially as we have only been married less than two weeks.

Married life has turned out to be that good, eh?

A while back I was asking a very similar question here on OM about camping near Ben Nevis. Have a look through this thread:

By the way, I phoned the Glen Nevis site a few days ago and they expect to be very busy over this bank holiday extended weekend. All the bookable pitches have been booked so it will be 'first come first served' on the remaining pitches - it's quite a big site, mind you.

Enjoy your trip.

Hi

Sorry I never got chance to reply before i headed up to Scotland. Glen Nevis camp site was great. I got there about 3pm on the Friday and there were plenty of pitches, but it did get busier the next day. The price was not too bad (about £20) for the two days.

I did Nevis via the CMD Arete, and then came down the tourist path. Next day i headed to Arrochar and did the Cobbler, which was great fun. I even met Alec Newman (the actor from Waterloo Road), he gave me some advise on threading the needle to get to the summit.

Thanks all for the advise.

Good to hear that you had a successful trip and that you enjoyed the camp site in Glen Nevis.
