Can anyone reccomend a good site on Dartmoor, got a free weekend soon and looking for a quick break (3 nights). Must have basics i.e toilet, water.
Thanks.

There's one beside Tor Royal GR about 599732. It's pretty basic, but I think it's very cheap. It's near Princetown so good for food et al. The loo had no bog roll when I went there, but it didn't cost me anything!

Rob, is it definately a campsite you want, or would you consider a camping barn?
The Dartmoor ones are particularly well equipped and < £4 per night.
Let me know.

'fraid it's gotta be camping ( trying to train the wife to be you know).
Did hear about a site at the Fox & Hounds Bridstowe (near a pub would be nice, got to break a good filly in gently) but can't find any info.
Any suggestions (politely please).

'got to break a good filly in gently'

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, dangerous words!

That's a pity, Rob, as I am a mine of information on Dartmoor CB's!
Assuming (after those eloquently put words) that you are still married, then these campsites that I know of might be of interest to you and your 'filly'.

There is a decent campsite in Princetown next to that all important pub, GR 591 734.

There is the Poundsgate site at 706 722. Nearby there is a cycle hire outlet.

There is also a site at Holme, GR-707 696.

You didn't say what part of Dartmoor you preferred, anywhere in particular?

Not really fussed. The three area you have mentioned above look ideal and Ishall check them out.Thanks.

PS The "Filly" has read the post and I'm still here.(Good job she's gota sense of humou).

It has got to be the Plume of Feathers Inn in Princetown. Fairly cheep, full facilities and the campsite within staggering distance of the pub (ahhh, happy memories)! Can get a bit crowded at peak times, but usually ok.

P.S. The full english breakfasts in the pub are fantastic!

Tony Mc
Can you help? Is the area around Huntingdon Cross suitable for an overnight?
Cheers

Got to second Jonathan's suggestion of the Plume of Feathers in Princetown. Have been a regular there for the last 7 or so years when I'm down that way. It's so central and the main track out onto the south moor runs right alongside the campsite. Just avoid Ten Tors weekend and you should be OK for a pitch! Food is fantastic - am looking forward to yet another "Plume Special" in a few weeks time. Have a good time.

Stopping at the "Plume" on Friday night but trying to find a good overnight for Sat.
Probably need a safe water supply (don't want to carry too much) and after reading my local guide books, can't be too spooky for the aforementioned "filly".

I have to admit that on the 10 Tors exped, we drank frmo streams, and there weren't al that many which I purified. If I'd had a filter, then maybe, but we didn't so I didn't want to wait 20 minutes for some cr*ppy tablets to work on the water.

Plume of feathers
much beer
Wonderful peace on the North Moor (as long as the ranges are open!)
Wonderful plume special to finish the weekend off.
When I die bury my heart on Fur Tor.

You can wild camp down near huntingdon cross at the Warren house there but no facilities other than peace and a stream (hell what more do you need?)
Erme pits is another super wild camp area plus the fact that hardly anyone ever goes there.

I have drunk gallons of water on dartmoor un purified. just go 200 metres upstream to make sure there are no dead sheep/ walkers/ men with tracksuits.
Never once had anything I could not put down to too much beer in the evening

Have to say the Plume was great.(except for the service, but maybe I'm just super critical having been in the pub/catering trade for too many years).
It absolutely lashed down on the friday night, got up for a pee and couldn'yt even see the pub, even though they had that bloody great floodlighty thing on!
Going back in a few weeks to camp and walk for our honeymoon, (I'll try not to lose her on Dartmoor this time).
Thanks for all the information it was a great help.

I booked a pitch at the Plume of Feathers for my girlfriend and I over the Easter weekend. I'm looking forward to this breakfast I've read about!!
