Been out over the Carneddau today after camping on Garnedd uchaf.

Straight away this morning there was obviously a big fire somewhere above Penrhyn Slate Quarries, somewere on the western side of the small summit of Carnedd y filiast at the Western end of the Glyderau.

For a time in the mid morning a pall of smoke was drifting eastwards and covering all of the ridge as far as Y Garn.

Later the fire started spreading down the Eastern side of the ridge, and sadly my phone battery died after this one poor photo. The fire kept spreading downhill throughout the morning, and a change in wind direction may have sent it further up towards the main summit.

It started yesterday sometime, over in Cwm Marchlyn and over night must have spread over the hill. Driving past Ogwen this afternoon and the air was thick with low-hanging smoke. Very apocalyptic! Links to a few pics:

There's been loads at the moment. Moel Rhiwen (near Llanberis) was burning on Sunday.

Sorry for going O/T but, that second pic seems to show a hut circle or denuded cairn.

Anyone know. ?

If you mean my second one, I think it's just an illusion (poor mobile phone optics) that make it look like a circular structure, though I was concentrating more on getting closer to the raven and looking at the smoke cloud than on the ground.

I live in Menai Bridge and we could see the glow of the fires from there

Ah, thanks for that.

The fire wasn't burning at 10:30am this morning. Damage didn't look too bad from the A5.

Just a thought - any chance it's swaling i.e. deliberate? Or too high for that? In England, from the Defra website, the burning season runs:

1 October – 15 April in the uplands
1 November – 31 March elsewhere
