After much waiting and anticipation, Grough Route is now live and looks promising.

Could this be the end of the likes of Anquet/Memory Map etc?

Works on proper clompooters, too.

Any body actualy used it yet and if so what is the feed back. Is it as good as it looks, is it good value and above all does it work

I've been trialling it for a couple of hours and once you get used to it it does look useful. However  having already got Memory Map, which serves my purpose  l  won't be changing. If starting from scratch then I might be tempted.

slow, jerky and messy.

I'll stick to MM

I agree with Glyn but I have not got MM and need 1:25,000 for a lot of the country. The trial period was resonable but  today I found out how slow the mapping is. I just hope it gets better

Morning all

Just a quick word on speed. Sadly those of you who are using Internet Explorer are having to contend with the somewhat archaic JS engine - it's anywhere between 5-10 times slower than the current Firefox/Safari/Chrome browsers for the kind of operations grough route carries out.

We don't particularly want to take the drastic measure of not supporting IE.

If you do have problems with speed, it's best to look at Firefox 3.5 or Safari - that's not to say you'd have to switch permanently, you could always use Firefox portable, so much the same as installing a piece of software as you would with other mapping systems.

Sorry, it's not ideal we know, but IE is hindering web apps

@Cush: There was a small problem with one of the servers that you might have got caught up in yesterday that held up serving the map tiles, which should be resolved now. The same servers are used for the trial period, there's just a restriction in place for the trial - so the speed should be the same.  Can you keep us informed as to how you get on?

I've been using it with Firefox and the speed is absolutely fine for me. There's barely any difference in speed between my 3g usb stick and normal internet either.

Having lots of different routes on the same bit of screen does slow down scrolling a bit, but I just turn off routes I'm not working on.

I *was* using it on Firefox too.

How about using GPS Route Planner

It's simple, but has 1:25k mapping of all the UK if you login (free), 1:50k if you don't, and you can download any GPX routes you draw for export to your GPS.

1:25k OS mapping of the whole UK completely free!
