Hi, Does anyone have any good routes for the Kinder Scout area, the ironic thing is that while I live in Sheffield I have never been up there, I've always gone round the Snowdonia area. To be honest I've not even got an OS map of the peak district yet, but plan to get one tomorrow before I go at the weekend, but if anyone can help me out beforehand it would be much appreciated

Steve,

Check out walking Britain.

Sorry I don't know how to do a hyperlink.

I have done a variation on walk 227, but followed the Northern edge a bit further and that was quiet a nice 12 mile walk or so with great views. Anyway, this will give you ideas. Alternatively buy High Peak Walks by Mark Richards (Cicerone Press) whhich would give uyou loads of ideas and is a very attractive book with sketch maps in the style of Wainwright.

My fav walk therabouts, and being a southerner who goes south more than north im no great expert would be to start by going up crowden brook, which is often quite when grindsbrook/ringing roger is thronged with the hoardes and then continue onto brown knoll/rushap edge to descend to edale from mam-tor,10 miles with 1700 feet of ascent so a nice length.Great views if its clear.

Chris's recommendation for Mark Richards' book is a good one - just don't try to follow any of the sketch maps!

My idea of the best long walk on Kinder is a circuit of the edges from just about anywhere, although Edale is nice (just don't expect quick service at the Nag's afterwards).

If you want something shorter than the 17 miles or so for the full circuit, one of the best short excursions is a climb up by the reservoir from Hayfield, past the Downfall to Kinderlow End, and back. Miles are easy on the edges though and it's worth doing the full round if you have time.

A new book about Kinder, with loads of history, photos and routes, edited by Roly Smith is new out - should be available from most quality local bookshops (and Waterstone's if you must).

Steve,
Blackden Clough is a good route up, just as good as Grindsbrook without the crowds, you then have various options, right to Fairbrook and Ashop or left to Crookstone Knoll or Jaggers Clough.

Thanks for all the advice. I've been an OM member for some time now but not really posted anything up here till now, What a great website with lots of very friendly people, once again...many thanks. I'll report back after the weekend with some photo's in the gallery.

A nice route up is to stop at the Snake Inn (plenty of parking on the road) and bimble up Fairbrook Naze, then go left (West) along the edge to the Pennine Way, drop down North and come back along the Snake Path. there's lots of chances of variation and extending or shortening the walk and you pass lots of interesting rock features.

Going up Jaggers clough is always a nice way up starting from Hope and then back down Grindsbrook where you have that nice smug feeling watching the hoards struggle up. I then get back to hope via Hollins cross and Loose Hill.

Other than that I also like going up blackden brook from the snake pass which is usually very quiet

Judith I presume you mean blackden brook is usually very quiet, not snake pass, which is anything but.

On blackden brook there is a nice short scrambly bit if you take the left fork away from the path when nearly at the top. The same goes for grindsbrook take the right fork at the point where you can just see the anvil stone.

Well the clocks have changed and those of us who are local can pop out for an evenings entertainment.

My favourite walk on Kinder for an evening is to ascend Crowden Brook (involves some lovely scrambling near the top) from Upper Booth. Then hang a left and pass the Woolpacks before heading down Jacobs Ladder.
