I'm off to Peru in September to trek the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. I'm looking for any hints and tips from others who have been there regarding the trail itself, best gear to take, brands etc, dealing with the locals, food & drink, anything that you would do different had you known the first time round. Thanks.

Inca Trail, Did it about 5 years ago and would certainly recommend it. Peru's a super place, Cuzco in particular.

The Inca Trail is 3½ day walk, with some great views. Gear? well I wouldn't worry about what brands. Normal UK walking gear will do, a decent waterproof, fleece and a base layer.

That said I did wearing normal cotton t-shirt, shorts and a cheap waterproof. I went over xmas/new year when it's wetter, but doesn't get too cold on the evenings - wasd ok with a sweater.

I went on organised trip then. Though I don't believe you can do independently now, there's sure to be local outfits in Cuzco that will organise it for you.

I'd also recommend trying white water rafting on the Urambamb while you're there.

Thanks for that Lloyd. I'm going over with a UK company that organise small groups and includes all flights accomodation porters etc so I guess I'm doing it the easy way although saying that, this is my first big trek and one at high altitude so something tells me it will be far from easy! How did you get on with the altitude yourself? Did you also climb Huayna Picchu as I'd really like to do that as well?

Typo above, river should be the Urabamba.

Was my first trek too, the 2nd day crosses the high point of Dead Womans Pass! I found it ok and had no probs at all with the altitude.

No I didn't climb Huayna Picchu, wish I had, though some said there were some dodgy sections early on!
