Has anybody ever used the postbus service to get to Torridon? If so what was it like? Seats? Already full? On time? Any help appreciated

as a car-less teenager i used the postbus, and postboat, service to get me all over the scottish highlands and islands. a better service than you might imagine, and for next to nothing, but their prices have inflated in line with national bus operaters.
it is a 'turn up and hope' system. many a day have i sat in a van (with seats) with a bag of letters on my lap! and the schedule was OK too.
60p for the bus it was then, and £1 for the boat to the islands! plus, the info gained by talking to the driver/pilot was second to none.
in them days the G.P.O. ran the service.

Not to Torridon... but i used the service last year to get me from Durness down to Lairg about seven quid... completely agree with everything tony says... you can get the timetables you need from Royal Mail helpline based at Sheffield/Derbyshire way, just ask them for the Highlands and Islands timetable, theres no prices - but once youve got the route you want just give them a ring....
One piece of advice is to check the drop off/pick up point(normally at harbours or p.o) to double check times location etc... otherwise you maybe waiting some time....

I've twice used postbus services up in the NW, over ten years ago mind you.
First time from Torridon to Kinlochewe - a Post Office minibus.
The other time was from Ullapool up to Ledmore Junction - a 'private' estate car.
Both times they were on time and the prices were reasonable.
Hitchhiking in that part of the world is normally pretty good and I'm quite sure you would never be stuck for a lift.

Thanks to all for the help,if I have to resort to the postbus it's given me a bit more confidence that I won't have a week on a rail platform!

I've just had a look at the Consignia (new name for post office) site. Apparently there are 230 post bus routes currently operating, I've asked where to find info on routes, I'll post (no pun intended) my findings
