Ghastly Eurotrash backpacker hangouts?

Idyllic bothies with a bit of luxury thrown in?

Or somewhere inbetween? Like Gatliffe Trust places, perhaps?

You mean these?

Aye, that's them. I'd never heard of them until having a chat with a couple in Camban a month back. Just curious what the general ambience is like - Howmore Heaven or (shudders) Portree Backpacking Hell? Aside from touching down at the heliport the Shetlands are a blank spot on my map.

The ones my gf and I used a few years ago were very well maintained, pretty well appointed and generally in really good locations. We did meet a slightly odd Dutch bloke at one, but he was ok really -- just talked a lot in a language we didn't really understand. He'd brought a tin of corned beef to last him about three days, seemingly under the impression there'd be a bus along at any moment to transport him to the nearest tiny shop, about nine miles away.

They look pretty good - maybe I'll check them out one day as Shetland and the Orkneys are one of the few parts of Scotland Ihave not explored.
