What's it all about?

Whilst out on Monday playing South of Snowdon, we came across a dissused slate mine, and in a field nearby were a load of flat slates sunk into the ground to look like gravestones?

Anyone know what it's all about? What's the story behind it? I'm keen to find out!

The GR is (about) SH612524, in Cwm Llan about 1KM from Gladstones Rock.

Let's see if this works...

Here should be a picture of them.

might have been some way of testing slate from different parts of the quarry/mine, seeing how they stand up to the weather, try the snowdonia national park web-site for an answer which doesn't contain pure 100% guess work!

Was it boggy round by the slates - just a hunch that it might be to indicate that???? Otherwise not too sure mate!
