Would you buy online?

What do you think? Would you like to be able to buy individual issues and / or subscriptions to these magazines here on the site?

Is there anything else you'd like to see on the page?

Er, Yes!

Oops that was two, this board doesn't like IE's stop button. Oh well.

James, I'm amused. Either you're submitting replies over and over again or you writing in to add extra letters to your last post that you missed out by accident. What if this was a magazine? Would I be reading a string of letters to the Editor reading 'would readers please add an extra 'p' to the letter I wrote in the last issue?'. Even better 'in this issue' a la Private Eye.

On the subject of magazines, was that a 'yes' to wanting to buy magazines or a 'yes' to wanting other stuff on the site? I'd like to see routes and accommodation booking on the site. It would be really cool if you could come on here and find out about campsites and B&Bs to go to for the weekend and read about other people's routes and finds etc. Actually, what would be really cool would be if you could then link route reports into the forum and then we could actually get in touch with whoever knows about them. Just a thought.

Well yes ok then, point taken.
The database of shops, climbing walls etc is a very good idea, but it does lack somewhat in content. This is not, of course, a fault of the web site, but it would help a lot if more of a point was made to encourage people to submit any information that might benefit us all. The "yes" was, indeed, an answer to both questions, but as my browser didn't like me writing more than one line of text without submitting that particular message before i had asked it to, and then, on my "stop" command deciding to submit it again, I fear that my full intent was not made clear in that particular posting.

Must say I agree with a lot of Sally idea’s above.
Would be great if could read about other people’s routes etc. , I believe there is such a facility on bikemagic.com – is that site related? as their layout seems fairly similar.
Also peoples campsites, B&B recommendations would be a good idea too.

Hi Lloyd, yes, we're very related to BIKEmagic, it's kind of our big brother - along with SURFmagic, BOATmagic, GOLFmagic, FISHINGmagic, SHEEPmagic - and yes, you're right, they do have routes and we will have as well.

One problem is that the routes on BIKEmagic are searchable but really only by telephone code, so if you want to go for a ride in, say, the Lakes, you'd need to enter perhaps a Kendal STD code. Obviously a lot of people travel to walk or climb or scramble, so it makes a lot more sense to arrange them geographically, which is what we'll be doing. Ditto on the accommodation front.

So basically, watch this space, it will happen.

Actually, there's a great article on sheepmagic right now about the return to wool as a primary outdoor clothing material.
09/10/2000 at 10:09
You have to remember Sally, that sheep don't really have much choice in the matter, plus they have a vested commercial interest in promoting wool.

I'm not saying that everything on SHEEPmagic is a tissue of lies, but I'd certainly consume it with a dash of mint sauce.

Ah yes, but this is just the problem. The sheep themselves actually get very little out of it. It's the distributors and jumper makers that clean up. Sheep would probably be very open to the idea of producing something else given half the chance. Gore Tex maybe?
09/10/2000 at 11:27
Well... They've now got goats genetically engineered to produce the super strong stuff from spiders' webs in their milk, so I reckon sheep clad in breatable, waterproof membranes should be somewhere just over the horizon. The spider stuff sounds like it might be handy for climbing gear mind.

"vested" commercial interest? Jon, do you really think you can slip the pun-wool over our eyes that easily? I think not
17/10/2000 at 11:06
In all seriousness Maria, there are material issues at stake here and I'm not prepared to be stitched up in another of your long-running pun fests.

that's quite a strong response there Jon, you've left me feeling quite sheepish. Ok let's not spin this out any longer, or we'll spoil the thread.
17/10/2000 at 11:13
Sheep might suffer if they were clad in Gore Tex. If it got soaking wet outside they might not be able to breathe anymore. On this note, if we maintain our breathability by never really being soaked through (ever seen 'wet' skin?) is super-beeding on jackets actually the key to maintaining their breathability during torrential rain?

Getting back to the original question - I like the look of "On The Hill" magazine, but I haven't been able to find it - so yes, I'd like to be able to buy online. In the meantime, any idea where I can buy it ?
17/10/2000 at 13:45
We're working on providing the opportunity to buy online, in the mean time, On The Hill's circulation manager is a guy called Mick Orrin: 01206 505912.

It's reasonably easily available in Glossop, the magazine desert of the north by the way...

I'm lucky enough to have a reasonably well stocked WH Smith nearby. So the only magazines I'd like to buy online are the Frenchy ones like Montagnes with their lovely pictures. Pouvez-vous l'arranger, Monsieur?
19/10/2000 at 22:50
Hmmm... Vertical, Desnivel et al. It would be kind of neat and it's something I'd like to do, but I suspect the logistics will defeat us... Some of the American mags would be nice too, even if they are a bit Yank-ocentric.

'OUTDOORSmagic; nil. Practical Logisics; three'
