Where to go in Scotland?

I am struggling to think of somewhere to spend a week in the hills. It's my annual Scottish solo trip and this time I want to find out what all this Munro bagging lark is about. That means I'm looking to get as many ticked as poss. Was thinking Glen shiel. I think one side of the loch then the other side would bag a decent hail and make two gd mini trips. I'm,happy doing one longer trip or splitting it into shorter ones with car transfer. Did Knoydart last year without bagging many, only the one, but there are only 4 there anyway.

Any munroists out there? If there are any please can you help?

I prefer quality not quantity.

If you like mountains and have never been to Torridon go there immediately there is 3 monsters waiting for you.

The 5 sisters of Kintail are a pretty sight.

Check out the reports on scottishhills.com .

Day-walking or camping.

Fisherfield would be my destination of choice if the latter.

If you're determined to bag munros then Glen Shiel is a good bet.

Just a warning the bus from Shiel Bridge to Cluanie Inn cost £7.20 each single, last summer. So I would plan to avoid having to use it!
There are 7 munros on the north side and 7 on the south side. I did the lot last year over 2 trips. Had a great time.
Happy to answer any questions you have.

It's just walking up hills.  Not much different to walking up hills that aren't Munros, only it may not be as far to the top...

I don't recommend the approach we took to Saileag when we took part in the 1998 Water Aid Munro Challenge; straight up from the road to Bealach an Lapain.  We wanted to make sure we got to our designated peak, and Saileag's rather in the middle of the ridge...

I'll be camping, with as much food as needed so I don't have to come down all week.
Agree quality over quantity but if I don't kick start my list I probably won't bother. I only did the wainwrights because I'd done most of them without knowing it.
The Glen Shiel option, cld it be done by walking it all in a week? Both the north and.south sides? Want to do Fisherfield one day and Torridon but think I'd rather do them with someone else, if only due to lack of confidence in being out solo. In my mind Shiel area is less remote and I suppose.scary than the other areas. I haven't done much solo stuff, about two or there trips and none more than,2 or 3 days on own.

The midges will be out by then.  Guess you are aware of them?  You may prefer to stay east whare they are not so voracious.

Mamores and Grey Corries give quantity and quality. As do Fisherfield and Glen Shiel, of course.

You can be lucky abt the midges that week. I've generally never had any midge problems in the same week over a few years now. Weather is usually good then too. Midges can be out but I guess I've been lucky so far.

Did Skye a few years.ago. Same with Knoydart. Skye was nice. Trotternish ridge then through black and red Cuillins. Mmmm!! Out via the Loch Coriusk to Elgol ferry. Dolphins, seals and numerous sea birds as we passed. Can't best weeks like those, especially as my one and only trip their was done in perfect weather and no midges!!!! Jealous anyone?

I'm also thinking of heading up to Scotland to do some walking in a few weeks time and found a wonderful website called WalkHighlands.

To find a route click on the map on the home page, then drill down further into the area and the walks.   It will then give you lots of info about the route, including a map, route profile, GPS waypoints as well as an option to download a Google Earth KMZ file.

dont get hooked on the munroes, there are some big crap ones. stick to doing the walks which you want to do because they are good.

have you been up past ullapool? that area is amazing.

Didster - yes! Jealous. I only got 7 days of wall to wall sunshine and midge free days on Skye.

What surprised me about how lucky we we're was when I told some friends about the weather I got told they'd been going to Skye for 10 years and still haven't had more than the odd good day weatherwise.

You could make up an excellent bagging route starting from the Glen Shiel campsite, involving both sides of Glen Shiel and the Affric munros. The Loch Mullardoch monros can be added on too.

It does seem that Glen Shiel is stealing a march on the other options. I think it's on the bmc map of Knoydart. At least in parts so I'll have take a gd look tonight.

Thanks all. I still feel a newbie as far as Scottish hills go so advice is very much needed.

Id wait till a couple o days to go, then just head to where the good weather is!!.
there is fantastic landscape east and west.
12/05/2012 at 21:14
Got the OS 25k scale map. Looks like there are abt 23 munros within a week's walking distance. Also Glen Affric is on same map and looks like I cld get there and back within a week.
Gd point abt weather but reckon weather travels faster than I can so chances are the wet will hit me anywhere I go if I'm not lucky. At least wet in a nice area is better than nothing.
Is Glen Affric a wooded area low down? I was wondering if I got over there I cld shelter a but in the trees if weather came down. Reckon I'll tarp so simple to rig in the trees.
