Repored on the local news tonight that Keld and Kirby Stephen hostels have been sold at auction today.

They did not say who the new owners are at the YHA's request, but said the new owners stated they will be "refurbished and offering upmarket accommodation and would be open in time for next seasons long distance walking season".

If you are interested in seeing the news article click here. To watch it click 'Video' under 'Look North' on the RHS. The article is 15 minutes into the programme and only lasts a couple of minutes.

That's very sad. Never stayed at Keld but Kirkby Stephen was a nice hostel.

Keld YH was full when I passed a couple of weeks back (the Muker Show was on), so I stayed at the Tan Hill Inn for a bit of a laugh, just to say I'd done it.

I think a number of hostels on the Pennine Way, although being sold off by the YHA, will remain as hostels or budget accommodation. I stayed at Greenhead YH, which had just been sold at a price below what the YH expected. YH staff were still running it for a while, and the guy at the local pub had bought the building. All the same, the whole YH structure along the Pennine Way is being comprehensively wrecked.

By the way, there was a creepy old fella working his way from one hostel to another, at least, those faced with closure, and would bend anyone's ear for a good hour or five about the closures. He even had copies of letters he'd been blitzing the YH executive with, and would happily read them to you at the drop of a hat!

Paddy,

there was a creepy old fella working his way from one hostel to another - do you ever think that might be how you'll end up?

No - I want to be one of those four 'grumpy old men' in another thread - complaining about outdoor magazines!

I'm young and I'd be happy to moan about magazines if I thought It'd make any difference. Maybe I should stick to reading guidebooks.
