Berghaus has completely overhauled its pivoting pack-system for 2012 - here's a look at what's new with added chocolate content...

The first incarnation of the Berghaus Bioflex pivoting back system was certainly effective when we tested it back in 2004, but it was heavy and looked a little complicated and appeared fragile. On the plus side though, it made carrying big packs feel more natural and fluid and allowed greater freedome of movement and better balance particularly on uneven ground.

Fast forward to 2012 and Berghaus has completely redesigned the system, with the crack Mtn.Haus design team coming up with Bioflex 2, which is due to be launched next spring. The new version is lighter, simpler, with the whole pack pivoting in two directions using a neat alloy hub located on the centre of the hip-belt and, in lab tests, is claimed to be significantly more efficient to the point where you can actually measure the energy savings in terms of chocolate bars - we're not sure that's an inherently good thing.

Anyway, the Berghaus video above gives a really good idea of what's gone into the new back system, so take a look and, if you missed it first time around, have a quick gander at our first user impressions of Bioflex 2 direct from the Lake District complete with Leo Houlding content.

The new Berghaus Bioflex 2 packs launch early next year. More Berghaus stuff at www.berghaus.com.

Hmmm, looks very similar to Black Diamond's ErgoActiv pivoting hip belt, no?

Superficially yeah, but there have been a few examples of pivotting back systems all doing very similar things for similar reasons - Craghoppers had one a few years back and last year Pod Sacs had one in development, which I think has been shelved.

One thing is that they make more sense with bigger loads, but actually in the UK, pack size seems to be falling due to the increase in lighter, more compact kit generally. The smaller Bioflex 2 pack, I think, is 45L, there was a 35L one, I think, but that's not made it into production.

One thing that impressed me at the Bioflex launch a few months back was the thought that had gone into keeping the hip belt effective on the larger capacity packs, the internal frame thing. I've not come across anything quite like that before and the reasoning behind it seems pretty coherent.

Squeaking, and failing prematurely are two popular features of this sort of design.
