We popped over to see Sprayway the other day for a look at their new 2010 kit, both for this spring – in the shops now – and for later in the year. Here's a quick whisk through the new spring 2010 kits, a few highlights from the winter range on the site next week.

The new Nyx Jacket is a good looking, shorter-cut waterproof made using Gire-Tex two-layer Performance Shell fabric. Part of the brand's 'Trekking' range it has some really nice touches, particularly given that it costs only £130.

They include a two-way adjustable wired peak hood with a clever snap-away feature to hold it securely when folded down. It's similar to the arrangement on the Berghaus Mera Peak, but a lot easier to use. You also get tethered face drawcords with hidden cord locks and roomy, map-friendly pockets.

The women's version is called the Eos and has the same features in a women's-specific package and, of course, nicer colours.

The Solo Softshell Jacket is the latest in a succession of Sprayway's weather-resistant tops using a durable TechWeavePro Nylon fabric that's very wind resistant and treated with a DWR for water shedding. There are no fewer than four pockets, set high to clear a pack belt and with a venting mesh lining while cuffs and hem are adjustable. Price for the Solo Softshell is £70.

The women's eqivalent is called the Fortuna Softshell and looks to have a neat, women's-specific cut and, as ever, nicer colours.

The Compass Pants look like classic outdoor legwear. Same soft shell TechWeavePro fabric as the jackets above, zip fly and zipped hand pockets, a large zipped thigh pocket and articulated crotch for easy movement. Soft shell fabric work brilliantly for legwear and it's worth noting that there are also convertibles and shorts in the range. Shorts are £35, pants £50 and convertibles £60. The women's version is called the Challenger Pant.

Also new is the Discover Tee, a simple baselayer top made from Cocona fabric which uses carbon derived from coconut husks. It wicks and dries really fast and also has decent natural odour-handling properties. As a nice touch, there are no internal labels for comfort and seams are cover stitched for the same reason. Price is £30.

The women's version is called the Explore Tee and costs £5 less at £25. Looks neat close up thanks to the striped fabric – the dark stripes contain the Cocona yarn by the way.

Also new in the legwear department is the Havanna Pant, an all-round walking trouser made from tough polyamide fabric with a water-shedding DWR finish. Lots of pockets. And pretty much the same cut and design, but a different fabric is the Panama Pant, which uses polycotton fabric for warm weather conditions.  Both are priced at £40 and there are Havanna Shorts and Panama Combis to choose from as well.

Finally, for those days when you simply want a non-technical cotton tee with an outdoor feel, the Drifter Tee is made from organic cotton and features an unmistably mounainy design - available in four colours and priced at just £15.

The women's tee is a cracker with floral dragon print and is called the Roam Tee, price is the same as the men's version.

Sprayway have come a long way since I last bought some of their kit in the early 80's. That was a boil in the bag waterproof coat. Not being UK based I'd missed their evolution, always dismissing their kit as old hat.
They seem to be doing a lot of interesting stuff nowadays, do people rate them?

my very first walking jacket was a second hand Sprayaway.i thought it was the bees knees back then, but i think i have moved on to more technical/specific kit like weight, short cut, better fitting, less run of the mill stuff.

I've always thought some of the Sprayway stuff was pretty good. They have used some good materials over the years -- for example they were one of the first firms to use the Polartec "fluffy fleece", in their Zone 1 and 2 ranges, I think. My impression is that their stuff hasn't been at the cutting edge in terms of construction, but it is generally pretty competent and good value.
