Summer Soft Shell Round-Up

Soft shell for summer? Yes, here's a selection of eight top soft shell tops that we think are better suited to warmer conditions ranging from hooded, full-on mountain shells through to more minimal garments that work well for faster-moving stuff like running, biking and light hiking.

None of them are full membrane soft shells made completely from a fabric like Gore Windstopper or Polartec PowerShield because we reckon non-membrane and mixed-up hybrid soft shells work better in hot conditions where breathability is as important as weather protection.

Most of them are made from what's known as double-weave fabrics - closely woven, often stretch polyamide or polyester fabrics which have a different texture inside to the outside to help moisture move outwards.

Why Soft Shell?

One last thought, you might not think you need a soft shell, but they're brilliant on days when you need more wind protection and water than you'd get with a microfleece, but more breathability than with a fulll wind or water-proof shell. And the stretch built into many of these tops makes them brilliant for upper body mobility when climbing or scrambling.

And because they all have subtly different designs and characteristics, you can choose one to suit your personal priorities. Hoods are great for general mountain use, for example, but tend to flap around if you're running or biking. Pull-ons are lighter, but offer less venting and so.

Anyway, on with the show, here are nine of our favourite summer-friendly soft shells in a nutshell...

Another option would be Rohan's Windshadow, one of which I got in their 20% off Mayday sale (normally they're £86.81).

It's a polyamide windproof with full front zip, two handwarmer and two upper pockets (outer one takes an OS map). All the pockets are mesh-backed and (except the upper internal one) vent. There's a rollaway hood with an elasticated surround, and the jacket has adjusters on each side for the hem. Comes in at (a claimed, not double-checked but I've not found them lying in the past) 220g, pretty good for a 4-pocket hooded windproof.

The fabric is rather nice, smarter and nicer feeling than Pertex IMHO. The DWR saw off the 20 minute shower I rode through this morning. Available in a nice bright (but not too bright) blue or the usual Henry Ford/Stealth.

Good bit of kit IMHO. Well pleased with mine.

Pete.

They didn't test the £9.99 one I saw in Lidl last weekend

Again another option and one i have is the Berghaus Men's Saltoro Softshell Jacket (Black) - http://store.berghaus.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product8_11201_10252_4-34574_-1___

Prices range from £65-£80. I bought it for a hiking/camping trip to the Lake District and Loch Lomond during the April/May bank holiday and have to say it was excellent.

Designed to be a technical fit, it is lightweight and breathable. Features a 4 way stretch AF-Softshell, is wind resistant, tough and has a DWR finish which worked well during light downpours.

Also has two main pockets and arm pocket as well. I have used it climbing mountains as well as recreation and sport and it is very good (in my opinion) :)
