A Gore-Tex Jacket For £100...

Sprayway is launching a Gore-Tex jacket priced at £100 this autumn. Suddenly the top brand looks affordable

Reckon you can't afford Gore-Tex? You might be able to come autumn, when Sprayway is launching what we reckon is the UK's first 100-quid Gore-Tex waterproof jacket.

It's part of a general downwards price movement which means, for example, you can now buy a Berghaus XCR Slipstream technical climbing smock for £180 making it closer to bread than cake (in the Marie Antoinette sense of things).

The Sprayway jacket, called the Compact, is aimed at 'the less technical end of the market', which means adventure travellers and more casual walkers, and doesn't have all the bells and whistles of top-end mountain jackets like pit-zips and so on. It uses 'Classic' two-layer Gore-Tex with a polyester face fabric.

Says Bill Morrison of Gore: 'Gore-Tex fabric now has a portfolio of six different categories all of which cater to the different needs of the end user. "The Sprayway Compact is an entry point jacket that targets a less technical consumer than Gore's traditional core market. The Compact is a great jacket, incredibly comfortable, breathable and 100% waterproof.'

Let them eat cake, we say.

If this is true then i'm sold, i had always belived that gore tex had, rich and elitest to it's name but no!! Now the average walker/ climber can be protected from the elements better than ever! woohoo!

It will protect you from the elements assuming that a) it has taped seams, b) has a storm flap and c) has a reasonable cut hood.

It used to be the taping that was expensive, as Gore refused to outsource this process (along with the fabric production itself). Sympatex was thought to be a superior product as it stretched, but Karrimor buggered up their production and loads of jackets fell apart - not a good brand image.

Anyway, a straighter cut uses far less seams and therefore can be much cheaper.

Rowan, I wouldn't get all giddy and buy the jacket blindly just because it says Gore-tex. What if it only has 2 too-small pockets and is the wrong length? Other fabrics can perform well; look at the features and fit, too.
Besides, I thought you wanted the jkt for the Ten Tors? The new Sprayway jkt doesn't come out until Autumn. Sprayway make grand fleeces but have not had the same success with all their shell jkts. See the user forum here.
