Regular
OM users will be aware of our fascination with The North Face's new
range of casual 'bouldering' wear which goes under the name A5.
It's not just that there's a funky 'Never Stop Exploring' logo
under each and every fly or that you can make lots of bad jokes about
clothing named after major trunk roads and corresponding logos - M1
'You'd be better off heading south', M67 'You'll get there,
eventually' - it's more that it looks dead cool and is made from
nice-feeling cotton fabrics. Not too pricey either - the pants are
around 40 quid and the shirts 27 or so.
Well, the good news is that it's going to be in outdoor shops from
the beginning of February and you can expect to encounter some savage
marketing for the range all over the place from "cool booklets" in
lifestyle magazines through to sponsorship of major bouldering
competitions.
National A5 Day...
In conjunction with the BMC, TNF is sponsoring a national 'have a
go at bouldering day' which is cunningly scheduled for 5 April.
Geddit? 5A, 5 April. No, it was a bit subtle for us as well. Details
of A5 Day and how to find a participating climbing wall near you will
be appearing on the TNF
web site soon.
If you're a broadband user you can also entertain yourself by
downloading the 3 MB 'Destination Bishop' A5 trailer from the 'News
and Events' section of the site.
And at the Outdoors Show...
TNF is sponsoring the A5 International Masters Bouldering
Competition at the OS Outdoors Show at the NEC 14-16 March, plus you
can try bouldering for yourself. More information from the Outdoors
Show web site and, of course, you can take advantage of the
OUTDOORSmagic special ticket
offer to get in cheaper...
But anyway...
No pretence, really this stuff's about outdoor fashion, like the
big surf brands, I mean, you could wear it for bouldering or
climbing, but most of it's going to end up bar and sofa surfing, and
why the hell not? Here's a few bits of A5, for a load more see our
original
preview - also linked at the bottom of this page - not too shabby
really...
