We've just had a sneak look at an exciting new product from Alpkit in
the shape of the Gamma
S.P.E.C System glasses.
S.P.E.C stands for Spacial Perspective Enhancement Clarity System and
the glasses combine eyewear with a personal lighting offering in
Alpkit's words, the worlds first commercially available
realtime 3D lighting system.
The glasses, seen here in prototype form, were developed in conjunction
with Alpkit sponsored athlete, mountain biker John Ross. Ross, more
commonly known as 'Shaggy', required a lighting system that would aid
him with terrain identification on the Iditarod Invitational, a 350
mile bike race across Alaska earlier this month.
The glasses use a combination of red and green lenses combined with
powerful LED lighting to give the possibility of 'real time 3D
viewing'. The glasses aren't fully perfected yet, there are apparently
some issues with blurring through the red lens, but Alpkit is hopeful
of launching a production version this summer, 2009.
We reckon they should be spot on for use in Scottish winter conditions
and other flat light environments. Watch this space for an early review.
