Alpkit's Short Walking Socks
Designed for bikers but the AKdrenaline socks work brilliantly in approach shoes and mids.

 New from Alpit are their
short AKdrenaline
Coolmax socks
which the guys say were designed primarily for mountain biking, but are
equally effective as a short-cut walking sock that should work
brilliantly with approach shoes and trail-running shoes.
The socks are 100% Coolmax and packed with socky technicality. The
fabric is high wicking and quick drying, the socks have left and right
specific fit - just choose the one with 'L' or 'R' on it and fit to the
appropriate foot - they have sculptured Terry padding, a vented flex
point on the front of the foot, flat toe seam, a heel tab for easy
removal and high desity padding at 'impact points'.
We've been using some AKdrenalines and they make a really effective
short-cut walking sock. Unlike most short socks, they really are
lavishly padded. This makes them great for longer walks, though maybe a
little warm on the foot for really hot conditions. Height on our test
feet is just above the ankle bone, so nice and neat with low-cut shoes
and mids.
The socks come in men's and women's versions, are unpackaged to be nice
to trees, made in the UK and cost £9 per pair including
postage and packing. Full review after some more use, but early signs
are promising for anyone looking for a high-wicking, cushioned sock
that doesn't come halfway up your shins...

Best socks I've ever used for trail shoes such as Inov-8s and walshes are these Running bear ones - 3 pairs for £10 - or these Pete Bland ones - £4 a pair. Very tough, great when wet, and they do cover your ankle so protect it a bit from scuffs.
