'The Most Desirable Berghaus Kit Ever'?

The big B goes for a younger feel with Ator, its new range due out later this year.

As well as the new spring/summer stuff from Berghaus, most of which we've told you about before, we also got a sneak preview of their new Ator range, due out later this year and billed as 'THE MOST DESIRABLE BERGHAUS GEAR EVER'.

<

Ator is due out late summer and is aimed squarely at the younger, funkier end of the market. The customer, says Berghaus, is probably an urban dweller aged from 25-35 who plays hard at the weekend and wants kit that performs well, but also looks good at the same time and is 'ultra brand conscious'.

It doesn't mean Berghaus is turning its back on its traditional hill and mountain-walking market, Ator is in addition to Berghaus's other lines, not instead of.

Anyway, we were prepared to be all hard-bitten and cynical, but first impressions are that the kit really does look rather nice. It's a bit snowboardy and a bit streety with some fresh colour choices and a matching selection of six packs to go with it.

The fabrics are all technical, stuff like the new Gore-Tex Pro Shell, Windstopper soft shell, Polartec Thermal Pro and down and the range includes waterproof shells, windproof softshells, fleece, down insulation.

The name, since you ask, is Latin based and apparently supposed to denote action as in, 'innov-ator', 'elevator', erm, 'rotovator', but anyway, you get the the idea.

Anyway, here are a few pics to give you taste of what's coming your way later this year. Mostly all available for both men and women ....

T-Bone Jacket

It's an all-round shell with a removable snow skirt, so should be spot-on for skiing and boarding, fabric is the new three-layer Gore-Tex Pro Shell and it looks very techy and modern. That big hood is proper, complete with a stiffened peak and there's a choice of colours from dark shades, below, through to a burnt red and white number.

Arc Jacket

Looks kind of familiar but updated with contrasty zips and Airfoil fabric housing down for classic insulation with a slim fit, it says here. Looks nice, we think.

Strike Jacket

We like this one too. It's a totally windproof softshell made from Gore-Tex Windstopper Softshell fabrics and billed as 'perfect for mountain biking and lighterweight hiking'. Quite simple, but complete with a hood, which should make it very useable.

Clocker Jacket (we think...)

Siimilar colour, different jacket. This is what a fleece looks like in Ator world and we rather like it. Fabric is a Thermal Pro verslon of Polartec 200 and it gets a hood. The fabric feels lovely, soft and warm, so there.

And The Rest...

We've missed out some of the best names in the range, but the above should give you an idea of what it's about. The kit may look a little funkier than Berghaus's normal stuff, but the idea is that it should do the job just as well and appeal to younger buyers in the process.

What else can we tell you? Oh, those names, Bad Dog Pants and Corrupt Jacket get our vote :-)

Anyway, Ator won't be available until around August / September 2007 so don't go pestering your nice outdoors shop people until then.

Now I understand.

Berghaus have cottoned on to the fact that their brand is worn with honour by neds and chavs up and down the country.

So they've designed a range of clothing especially for them, hoping to wean them off the Mera Peak.

"The customer, says Berghaus, is probably an urban dweller aged from 25-35 who plays hard at the weekend and wants kit that performs well, but also looks good at the same time and is 'ultra brand conscious'."

Transformed from marketing speak:

"The customer, says Berghaus, is probably a street urchin with an ASBO, aged from 14-21 who hangs around on street corners, and wants kit that is easy to steal, conceals their identity, but also looks good at the same time and is 'ultra brand conscious'."

"It's <insert current vernacular word for 'cool'> innit?"

I don't think it seems that bad, looks pretty similar to the Quicksilver/O'Neil kinda fashion/outdoors brands that use technically decent designs that can be worn on the street. Berghaus is still a decent outdoors brand, they make some good kit. I saw a homeless bloke wearing a Patagonia snap-T once, does this mean Patagonia no longer deserve respect as a brand?

I think some of the old guys on here are just upset that they'd feel silly wearing perfectly functional but nice looking clothes just because they are designed for "young" people. Instead they choose old man "cool" brands like Paramo which may be perfectly functional but is far too ugly to ever become popular on the street.
