You can now download customised Anquet maps in a choice of scales from their secure server instantly rather than buying CDs and waiting for the postman. Smells like the future to us.

Anquet, one of the main digital mapping companies, has quietly ushered in a bit of a revolution in electronic navigation and mapping software by giving users the option to download customised maps of any scale direct onto their PC.

The new Anquet mapping server gives you the ability to download any area of Great Britain as big or small as you want at any available scale in minutes, well, assuming you have a fast connection anyway.

The basic Anquet mapping software is free to use and can be downloaded from their site along with free aerial photography and some free mapping which will allow you to see what the Anquet software is capable of including detailed path profiles, 2D and 3D map views, split screen use and lots more.

It all means that rather than buying CDs with predetermined areas on them, some of which you may not actually want, you can now simply select the exact area you normally walk in, pay for it using a secure server and then download.

Then you can use the Anquet software to create a route, copy it and the map onto Pocket PC, Smartphone or GPS and off you go.

You can find full details of the Anquet Map Server at www.anquetmapserver.co.uk.

Hi Dan from Anquet here.

Because the mapping in our software is seamless you do not open individual maps. Conceptually all available maps are opened at once when the program is started. If you have two maps of the same type next to each other and you zoom out you will see the content of both. You will not see the join. :)

To open anquet v06 double click the "Anquet Maps v06" icon on your desktop or click the start menu and select Programs -> Anquet Maps v06 -> Anquet Maps v06

If you want to jump to the area of mapping covered by a map there are five ways of doing it. The first is the most commonly used
1) Click the Map menu then select the forth option from the bottom "Go to map". This will open the go to map window. Select a product then click the go to button.
2) Click the Goto button ( or click the map menu and select go to grid reference ) and enter a grid location you know is inside the map.
3) Click the find button and search for a place name you know is on map.
4) Double left click a waypoint or route in the data explorer which you know is inside the map.
5) Change to one of the GB maps OS or Philips. Move the GB map so it is above the area covered by your new map. The map scale option at the top of the anquet v06 lists all available map types below the centre of your screen. If you are above a 1:50 Landranger map and a 1:25k explorer map both map types will be available to change to.
