Award-winning French Softshell Hits UK

Hooded softshell in one of our fave fabrics crossed the Channel for spring.

Polartec's Power Shield fabric is one of outdoor technology's unsung heroes in our book, so we thought we'd big up the Millet Premium Shield jacket that won one Polartec's 2007 Apex Awards.

The deal with Power Shield is that it uses a perforated membrane with a windproofness figure which is usually quoted as 98 per-cent. The idea is that you get effective wind and water protection, but breathability is significantly improved over comparable 100 per-cent windproof garments.

Also available in black...

In our experience it really does work well and is a great alternative to Gore-Tex Windstopper, particularly if you run on the warm side. The French brand's Premium Shield jacket is a full-on technical soft shell complete with a hood, something we reckon is a must on a mountaineering shell hard or soft.

The jacket gets an athletic cut, pit-zips, chest pockets and water-resistant zippers. The fabric itself uses a smooth, tightly woven Nylon face to give good abrasion resistance and a polyester velour backer traps warm air to up the insulation values.

A DWR - durable water resistant - finish, helpls the jacket to shrug off showers. It looks pretty good to us and, we're reliably told, will be available in the UK. Price is a not inconsiderable £210 and the jacket weighs in at a claimed 640 grammes.

Hi Jon,

if this jacket really is being sold for £210 then (costly as it may be) it is actually cheaper than the 289 Euro RRP in France. With the poor exchange rate at the moment £210 is about 275 Euros. They've been in the French mountain shops for a while and seem like a very nicely made item.

Usually there's a trans-channel markup (Petzl etc. seem to be about 20% more costly in the UK)... so perhaps for once the French will have a reason for a bit of 'le shopping chez les rosbifs'

By pure coincidence I purchased one of these jackets whilst in the alps last week (and there I was thinking that I would have something unique when I came back to the UK).

It's well made and designed, although not quite up to Arc'teryx or Haglofs standards.  The cut is vey slim and the orange colour really is eye-searing.

The pit zips are an interesting design, being placed on the torso in line with the torso. I haven't used the jacket in anger yet, so it remains to see how effective these are, compared to more traditional full length pit-zips.

What is neat - especially given the slim fit of the jacket - is the size of the pockets which run the full length of the torso up to the shoulders.

If there is a weakness, it is the hood, which has a fairly feeble peak, comapred to say an Arc'teryx Alpha SV.
