Berghaus's New Minimalist Climbing Pack

It weighs 670 grammes and carries 37 litres - in the shops now.

We popped over to see Berghaus yesterday and one of the shiny new things that caught our eye was a new, minimalist climbing pack which is appearing in the shops right now.

Called the Phantom Light it's a 37-litre climbing pack which is aimed squarely at minimalist mountaineering. That means a simple and sparsely-padded Fusion Light back system with a single main compartment.

You still get the bare necessities with tough but light Ardura 210 fabric, side compression straps, hydration system compatibility, reinforced haul loops, top tension straps and an internal rope compression loop.

It's a bit of a departure for Berghaus whose climbing packs have generally been sturdy and supportive, though strippable, like the Crag, and it looks very neat in the flesh.

Suggested retail price is £50 and you can see specs along with the rest of the Spring/Summer 2007 range at www.berghaus.com

Nice to see a successor to the excellent Slipstream of a few years ago, which is still the first pack I pick up whether climbing, walking or ski-touring.

I never did manage to get hold of a slipstream (my mate did...), it seemed to appear and disappear within 6 months! It was a great pack, I don't know why they discontinued it.
