What's It For?

The thinking behind the Travel Tap bottle is dead simple. Put potentially contaminated water in it and get purified, safe water minus nasties and any taint out of it, instantly. Ideal for walkers, climbers, trekkers, travellers and anyone else with a suspect water source.

The Techy Bits

The Travel Tap relies on a two-stage filtration unit which sits on the underside of the lid unit and has built-in micro purification which removes viruses from the water, so it combines physical filtration removing tiny particles with chemical-absorbing media.

In the words of drinkSAFE Systems: 'Special media absorbs water treatment chemicals and other chemicals that may be found in surface runoff- fertilizers , pesticides and herbicides and the filters have been specifically tested for removal of these'.

The filtering system removes pathogens, protozoa, schistomas, spores and viruses that are the causes of disease and sickness from untreated water sources. Apparently the filter contains unique, secret ingredients bonded within the filter as well as coconut carbon media.

Ultimately the Travel Tap will convert water from any freshwater source into pure, drinkable water with no bacteria, protozoa, schistomas and viruses and will also remove and reduce chemicals and chemical compounds from the water.

How It Performed

We've used the Travel Tap's predecessor, the Aquagear purification and filtration bottle before, notably while trekking in Nepal, and it's a brilliant, quick, economical and convenient way of purifying suspect water supplies.

The system's been tested by the UK government and found to work, so we can't really add anything to that. But what we can tell you is that the Travel Tap is incredibly practical and easy to use. You do simply put any old fresh water into it, screw the top back on then squeeze it out through the filter. And bingo, pure, untainted water.

The only waiting necessary is if you have water with sediment in, which you should leave for ten minutes to settle before pouring into your Travel Tap to prevent it from clogging the filter.

In the UK it's brilliant for peace of mind when drinking from lowland and mountain water sources - incidence of giardisis is on the rise in the UK - and also means that in areas with a ready water supply, you can leave your hydration system at home, potentially saving a wad of weight, as much as 3kg if you carry a full, 3-litre bladder.

The lifetime capacity of the filter is reckoned at being around 1600 litres and neatly, once the filter's life is exhausted, it shuts down automatically to protect you. You can also store the bottle then use again without any problems.

We used the current version in the Lakes with no problems and would happily use it anywhere there's a freshwater source.

Initial Verdict

Affordable, convenient, effective, light and weight saving at the same time. It's a simple way of sourcing pure water wherever you have a freshwater source.

Buy if you want a light, simple, effective water purification system and don't want to break the bank.

Light, simple, highly effective and easy to use, cheap too. No chemicals added.

Wait before using water with sediment.

Discuss this story

30 years ago I drank from mountain streams in  Snowdonia and the Lakes, more folk in the hills means more sh*t, and polluted water,  so only drink from streams in the Highlands now.

I have used a Travel Tap throughout 2009 and found it excellent. Flow rate is reasonable, and increases with a harder squeeze; drink straight from the bottle or decant into another.

I only carry a half litre of water at the start of the day, and replenish with the Travel Tap as and when I need to. This saves on weight for the uphill slog at the start of the day.

Would'nt be without it.

I've bought one of the DrinkSafe Explorer canteens for my trip to Nepal/India later this week.

My only disappointment so far was that the flow rate is quite slow if you want to use it to fill other containers.

That thing looks like the daddy to me. A good choice Benjamin!
