Forget eating your hat, over in the States, the latest backpacking innovation is a range of edible backpacking equipment.

Eastern Active Technologies (EAT) produce a whole range of edible backpacking gear made from sugar, starch, carb and meat-based materials. The idea is that you eat your kit as you go with the result - and we quote - 'Your Last Mile Is Your Lightest Mile'.

How does it work? Easy, the company produces edible shelters, sleeping bags, pads, stove fuel, trekking poles and tee-shirts. You stick the kit in your SnackPack edible rucksac and munch your way happily along your chosen multi-day route, obviously being careful what you consume first.

The SnackPack 1
- in four flavours...
The kit comes in various flavours, the Gummiskin fabric used for the SnackPack, for example, is available in a choice of Blueberry , Mango, Passion Fruit and Spice while the Protein Sticks trekking poles come on Beef, Chicken, Shrimp and TVP varieties.

Here at OM Central we reckon it's a fantastic and innovative idea for the hardcore lightweight backpacker and we're actively attempting to arrange for some test gear for review on the site. Meanwhile for more details see the informative EAT web site where you can buy online.

My mistake, it is serious. I feel a test coming on for this kit. Durability, comfort, weatherproofing and of course wind potential.
