Men's tee in light-ish and white-ish 190gm merino, also available with long sleeves.
Women's variants too, the long-sleeved one has a vee neck.

Lake District-based outdoor clothing brand EDZ has been producing merino wool base-layer clothing for a while - we currently have some on long-term wear test - and the latest addition to the range is a choice of white merino tops for both men and women.

Better In The Glacial Heat

If you're wondering why on earth anyone would want a white base layer - harder to keep clean, less stylish etc - we're thinking it's all about hot conditions and glaciers in particular. If you've been on a glacier in alpine conditions, you'll know that while things are cold at night, when sunlight gets onto the snow, things gets surprisingly hot very quickly with the sunlight being reflected by the snow and ice.

In those conditions, dark-coloured clothing tends to absorb heat and get very warm, very quickly, while lighter shades, in particular, keep you cooler by reflecting more of the heat. As a bonus, merino is pretty comfortable in warmer conditions too.

And of course it's not just in glacial conditions that lighter colours work, they're also better in hot sunshine generally.

Long Or Short Sleeved

EDZ has men's and women's versions in two styles, a long-sleeved and short-sleeved tee at £40 and £30 respectively with the women's long-sleeved version having a vee-neck. Both use 190gm 100% merino wool with flat-locked seams which is machine washable at 30˚C.

We've been favourably impressed with the quality of the latest EDZ merino wool tops, the fabric has a quality feel to it and so far it's washed well, so they look like a good option if you're looking for good value, light-coloured merino base layers.

Didn't US Army research conclude years ago that there was little difference in heat in the sun between dark and light coloured clothing?

I think there is something in reflecting UV though. The idea of heat comes from the emissivity of dark and light surfaces. I'd have thought that applies more to other types of materials than fabrics although you do get that early in the year sun warmth with darker coloured pants.#

one outdoor gear manufacturer once produced a black fabric that it sold, in its blurb, that it reflected as much UV back as light colours. Was it Mammut?

Mammut claimed it just reflected the infrared energy. Though I've never quite worked out how it doesn't end up reflecting your own heat back at you in the same way that foil space blankets work?
