Everest Climber Exposed As Fraud

The mountaineering community has been rocked by new that a leading climber has made deliberately misleading claims for purely commercial reasons.

The world of high altitude mountaineering has been rocked to its very core with the shock news that one of the world's best known aspiring climbers is an unashamed fraud.

OUTDOORSmagic, along with dozens of other reputable media was completely taken in by 85-year-old Mary Woodbridge who claimed that she was planning to attempt Everest by a new route along with her Dachshund, Daisy and in a single push without camping. We pledged support for her efforts and were proud to be mentioned on her site as supporters of what promised to be a brave and original feat of mountaineering.

Imagine our disgust, therefore, when Mary was revealed to be the devious creation of an advertising agency working for a well-known Swiss outdoor clothing brand. The rationale behind the campaign was that Mary was so impressed by her new jacket, that she completely lost her grasp on reality and believed herself capable of tackling the world's highest mountain.

Doggy Dreams Dead

Here on OM we believe that such campaigns are the death of dreams, by uncovering Mary as a fraud, the brand concerned has shattered the dreams not only of numerous old ladies who might have been inspired to take up mountaineering in their retirement, but of gullible Dachshunds who dreamed of following in the footsteps of the fearless Daisy.

In reality, Mary is an actress called Sheila Latimer, who has also appeared in The Legend of Tarzan and in Sutherland's Law while rather disturbingly, 'Daisy' turns out to be a male dog called 'Mr Ben'. And no, we're not going to tell you which brand it was because that would mean that viral marketing works ;-)

I seem to remember hearing or reading that she's decided to do Pendle Hill instead.
