iOSMaps applet gives free 1:10k and 1:50k OS mapping

iOSMaps With OS mapping available for Windows and Symbian 60 (that's Nokias and most recent phones) it was only a matter of time till someone came up with a solution for the iPhone, and sure enough an applet has arrived that offers live location based OS mapping with a choice of 1:10k and 1:50k mapping where available.

iOSMaps is available from the App Store and runs on both iPhone and iPod touch free of charge. The application makes use of the Ordnance Surveys's new Open Space API and Apple's Core Locations to bring you location based downloads. You'll need an internet connection to download the maps, but as most users have an unlimited data plan these days that's no big deal if you can get a signal  - and you can always download over a wifi connection if there's one available. You're not restricted to just maps based on your location, but can download according to Postcode or Grid Reference, meaning you can download the maps you'll need before venturing out onto the hills where the signal may not be good enough for live downloads.

You can look up place names and postcodes and get accurate OSGB36 and WGS84 grid references directly from the application and pan your way around Great Britain with just your finger, zooming using a swish pinch gesture. Enter shortcuts into the iosmaps search bar found on www.publicfootpaths.com to make maps highly specific and navigation a breeze.  With detailed cartography on rights of way, geological and geographical features you can use iOSMap for  walking, cycling, running, skiing and pretty much any outdoor activity where maps are used..

It's supposed to work for the ipod touch according to all the marketing blurb, though I've only tested it on the iPhone.

I've downloaded it and it's a bit bonkers. It is mostly a grey screen; when it eventually does something it's not right. I put in the post code of my local post office and it says I'm in Rutland.
