Gore-Tex Paclite Gets Stretchy

A new version of Gore-Tex's lightweight Paclite waterproof and breathable market-leading fabric takes the original and adds a useful degree of stretch for better fit and mobility.

The latest innovation from the guys at Gore-Tex is something called Stretch Gore-Tex Paclite.

It doesn't really take a genius to work out that it's a stretchy version of the lightweight and very breathable Gore-Tex Paclite fabric that's established a reputation as probably the best lightweight breathable waterproof fabric out there.

The Stretch version of Paclite shares its namesake's grey inner layer and breathability, but has two-way stretch properties in the same way as the 'stretch' version of Gore's harder-wearing XCR fabric. That means panels of the Stretch Paclite can be used to improve fit and, potentially, mobility, in technical lightweight garments.

It's not really intended to be used to create an entire garment, instead it's added as panels in areas like sleeves, elbows, shoulder and back to improve overall fit and mobility.

Right now we know of just three garments using the new fabric. Berghaus's Endurance Paclite Jacket (£175), Srayway's Strike Stretch Men's Paclite (£200) and Sprayway's Fury Stretch Paclite Jacket for women (£180). Sprayway, incidentally, has been bought by the company behind Mountain Equipment, so you can expect to see more of it around this year.
