Gregory Expands Z-series Range

Ace-carrying new day-sacs announced by American pack specialists.

We were very impressed with the performance of the Gregory Z30 we had on test last year and the good news is that Gregory is expanding the range for summer 2008.

There are two new Z-series models, the Z25 and the Z35 along with women's-specific versions the Jade 25 and Jade 35. Both of the new packs use the same basic chassis and principles that we really like on the Z30.

New Jade 25 and Z-25 packs - out in July

That means a JetStream back system that combines an air-gap arrangement with direct load transfer onto two metal tubes from the shoulder straps. In effect, if you load up the pack, the tubes come under more tension which stiffens the back system making for a more stable carry.

It's a neat idea which works very well in real life making the Z30 one of the few daypacks we've tried that's in the same carrying league as the exceptional Osprey Atmos. Other neat features include Gregory's Autofit harness system with canted 3D shoulder straps, six-point compression system and stretch side and front pockets.

New Z35 (left) uses conventional lid system, but still has panel access
as well. Back system combines load transfer and suspended mesh
for an excellent carry which stiffens as you load up.

The new Z35 differs from the Z30 in using a conventional lidded pocket albeit with optional panel access as well, compared to the 30's zipped panel opening system, while the 25 retains the panel format. Both also have handy waist belt pockets.

One useful point for anyone who mountain bikes is that unlike the Atmos 25, the Z25 sits low enough not to foul the back of your helmet on really steep descents. We know this because we already have a Z25 on test, more of that soon, but early impressions are good.

Both new packs will be on sale from about July, the 35-litre versions will retail for £95 while the 25-litre ones will go for £80. That's not cheap, but you're getting a lot of pack for your money.
