GSB System Being Phased Out

The innovative Grivel/Scarpa crampon binding is headed for the rubbish heap...

Following on from our recent explanation of the Scarpa/Grivel GSB crampon system, we understand that GSB boots and crampons are being phased out and will no longer be available by the end of 2010, though some GSB boots are still available.

Grivel GSB crampon
Doomed - these Grivel GSB crampons are marked for deletion...

Slightly ironically, we were using GSB crampons on Striding Edge yesterday and liked the system, however we've heard anecdotal stories of sole wear around the GSB-locating slot and some instances of the slot being blocked by frozen snow and/or small bits of gravel.

Don't panic if you've just bought a pair of GSB-compatible boots, they can happily be used with conventional bail-type crampons where appropriate or with cradle-type bindings. Additionally, GSB crampons themselves already have the holes for metal toe bails built into the crampon, so can be converted using parts from Grivel.

The move seems a shame as our experience of the GSB system is broadly positive.

Funnily, whilst there's a lot of discussion of the pros and cons of stainless vs cromo steel, I couldn't actually find any product details on that website...

Oh.  Silly me.  I should have read the 'synoptic table'...

Now, I consider myself pretty fluent in English, but 'synoptic' isn't a word that falls within my day-to-day vocabulary.  'Product Table' might have been simpler...

An email is on its way to Grivel.

Don't read weather reports then capn p? Or the New Testament ?

The Italian is "Tavola sinottica"  .. I think "Summary Table" would be a better translation than "Product Table", especially considering the context.

Possibly a more literal translation, yes.  But for actually being useful to potential customers, trying to find products, 'Product Table' might be better...

Weather and Gospels were the links my brain made, I think, neither of which seemed to be appropriate to selecting crampons...
