Helly Hansen is the latest manufacturer to jump onto the
fast-rolling soft shell bandwagon for this winter.
They have a new range called INTERFACE which, they say,
'represents a totally new approach to the design and performance of
outdoor clothing'. After years of promoting the layering system,
Helly says that 'the fundamental fact is that no truly waterproof
fabric can breathe enough to keep the user dry during moderate to
high levels of activity.'
Helly's answer to the problem comes in two versions, INTERFACE
BW which prioritises breathability above water resistance,
but still has DWR to keep out light to moderate rain and INTERFACE
BW, which puts the premium on waterproofing and uses a
totally waterproof coating with an exposed weave on the inside which
Helly implies wicks moisture from lower layers to up
breathability.
There are three INTERFACE jackets: the Levitation, a high alpine
shell with reinforced bits; the Catalyst, ' a very
breathable lightweight jacket' and the Trance, which is intended for
snowsports.
The range is only going to be available from a limited number of
outlets including Outside in Hathersage, George Fisher in Kendal and
Skipton, YHA Shop in Wardour Street and Centre Sport in Leeds.
The programme rolls out in October with limited stocks. For more
details you can call HH distribution on 01925 839950. In the mean
time, we'll try and get some piccies and more details of the fabrics.
