Helly Launches Trail Running Shoes
New Helly Hansen Pace Interceptor offers another outdoor brand option for trail runners.

Seems like trail-running shoes are all the rage with outdoor companies this year and one you can actually run in too rather than jumped up approach shoes and the latest brand to launch a pair is Helly Hansen with its new Pace Interceptor available for both men and women.
The shoe's reckoned to be lightweight, durable and protective and - we quote - 'designed to withstand adverse weather conditions and challenging terrain'.
The weather proofing is down to a HellyTech Performance waterproof liner while the synthetic and mesh upper uses welded seamless reinforcements for slick looks and smooth foot comfort. Judging from the images - left - there's plenty of reinforcement for those days when you find yourself plughing through scree and loose rubble.
Plenty going on down under as well. The shoe uses several grades of cushioning foam with C-Zone cushioning under the heel and C-Zone + at forefoot claimed to absorb shock and, in the case of the forefoot, also help propel you forward through a 'high energy return rate'.
They also seem to be more of a traditionally supportive shoe with lot of structure rather than a new school minimalist beast - there's a TPU shank designed to minimise lateral twisting of the shoe, obvious external reinforcement under the arch and a thing called Roll Cage which is said to hold the midfoot securely.
Looking at Helly's web site, the outsole looks reassuringly seriously lugged and aggressive, which should make them soft conditions friendly. We're thinking cushioned and stable rather than minimal and we're not huge fans of wateproof running shoes, but if that's your bag, both men's and women's versions retail for £110.
