The impressively breathable eVENT waterproof and breathable membrane is set to feature prominently in Hi-Tec's extensively upgraded 2005 range. Good prices too.
One major failing of footwear with waterproof, breathable lining
technologies is that in hotter conditions, the liner generally has
problems coping with the amount of moisture kicked out by sweaty
feet, which can be as much as half a pint of liquid in the course of
a day.
To date, the best breathable waterproof clothing fabric we've used
has been eVENT, which has consistently impressed us with its
overall breathability. The good news is that as of next
spring, Hi-Tec and at least one other major footwear brand, will
be using eVENT membrane in some of its outdoor footwear.
This year's Hi-Tec V-Lite boots have had a generally
positive reception, though the company's inability to actually send
us a pair means that we haven't been able to test them. Next year
though, the range is considerably expanded with eVENT proofing being
used alongside Sympatex in Hi-Tec's top end boots.
New Backpacking Range
Like Brasher, the company's expanded its range and moved higher up
the mountain with some interesting looking new models in the range.
The Pinnacle, for example, is an eVENT-lined, full grain
leather backpacking boot complete with a Vibram sole and a moulded,
thermoplastic external support frame reminiscent of Salomon's classic
X-Adventure 7.
Amazingly the price is just £80, which should make it an
interesting option for buyer's on a tight budget. And for £10
less you could have the Apex a classic looking eVENT lined
suede and fabric number, again with Vibram sole, EVA mid-sole for
cushioning and a stell shank.
More V-Lite Too
Next year's top of the range V-Lite boot, the Sierra V-Lite
eVENT priced at £70 again uses eVENT in an ultra
lightweight, full-grain leather hiking boot claimed to weigh roughly
1000 grammes for a pair.
It also incoporates 'A COMFORT TEC PLUS removable sockliner
not only wicks away moisture created by the foot but will help
prevent bacterial build up and offer odour control' as well as
lightweight, rustprof harware and a Drilex moisture-wicking lining.
Looks interesting.
The boots above and others should be available early next year,
and if eVENT works as well as a footwear liner as it does in clothing
then they should be well worth waiting for. More information about
