This is the Hi-Tec Sierra Lite I WP, one of a new, five-strong range of lightweight walking footwear from the brand featuring the durable ion-mask water-repellent technology along with a range of other design features.

We thought the boot looked great when we saw a pre-production version at the European OutDoor trade show last year and we're looking forward to getting hold of a production boot for review. The new range, says Hi-Tec, can trace its heritage back to the lightweight Hi-Tec Sierra boot of the late 70s, but it's more obviously the latest development in a rapidly improving range from the last few years.

ion-mask And More

Along with the impressive ion-mask technology, which coats the whole boot, laces and all, with a thin monomer layer which repels water and dirt, the new boots also feature other patented features including i-Shell, which 'enhances the fit and support of the boot' it says here. And '3D Counter Balance technology provides stability and cushioning meaning a smoother, straighter centre of pressure and less chance of injury' with reduced pronation.

Finally, the overall V-Lite philosophy is about stripping away as much weight from the boot as possible without compromising durability or performance.

Custom Vibram Sole

In the case of the top-of the-range Sierra Lite I WP pictured, that means all those technologies married to water-resistant Nubuck and mesh fabric uppers with an exclusive custom Vibram outsole giving grip across all ground conditions. It looks pretty striking too with the distinctive mesh panels acros the forefoot.

Sure, £125 would be a steep price for old school Hi-Tecs, but our experience in recent years is that the brand's footwear is getting better and better with a lot of research and technology going into the product, so we're really looking forward to seeing how the new boots actually perform.

Also in the new range are four other models including a Low version of the Sierra Lite I WP, the Sierra Trek WP - a chunkier built boot for all-round use - plus the Sierra Sneaker and Mid, a more casual take on the concept with a crossover urban outdoors feel to them.

Interesting stuff. More info at www.hi-tec.com.
