Jazzing it up in Keswick
Jazz and the outdoors are a perfect mix, right? Over the weekend they sure were - at the 2005 Keswick Jazz Festival, sponsored by Jennings Brewery for the ninth consecutive year.
More than 90 jazz events featured a full range of jazz styles and venues included town centre bars, hotels, churches, the Alhambra cinema and the Theatre by the Lake. The festival also spilled out onto the streets of Keswick so if you were lucky enough to be in the area you wouldn't have been able to escape the carnival even if you wanted to. Why on earth would you want to do that anyway? Punters were also offered the chance to wind their way through the streets of Keswick on a pub trail organised by Jennings.
The festival ran from 12th – 15th May. For more information on how to jazz it up next year visit: http://www.jenningsbrewery.co.uk
More Open Access Land in Wales
If jazz isn’t your thing, perhaps wandering the Welsh countryside is. If this is the case, then we’ve got news for you - the Welsh countryside will open out this month as a result of Rights to Roam legislation.
This month, the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 will grant a statutory right of access on foot to over 350,000 hectares of open country and registered common land. It will mean that the total area with rights of access, including public forests, will be 451,000 hectares. The current right of access is limited to 84,000 hectares so prepare to venture further into the unknown, Wales style…

UK’s Largest National Park Plays Host to John Muir Trust AGM
Gone are the days of meetings held in stuffy offices on uncomfortable chairs... if the John Muir Trust AGM’s are anything to go by. The latest AGM meeting was held in Braemar in the Cairngorms National Park and featured Andrew Thin, convenor Cairngorms National Park Authority as a key speaker. Somewhat fitting, considering John Muir is famous for having started the national parks movement in America in the 19th Century.
If only all meetings could be held in the great outdoors. Now that’s what we call getting back to nature!
Navigation News
Speaking of nature (or finding your way through it) Thales Navigation have launched three new handheld GPS navigation systems in the ®eXplorist™ series. The ‘new kids on the block’ are the the eXplorist 400, eXplorist 500 and the eXplorist 600. We’re told that the new models offer precise positioning, high-level functionality and simple handling, doubled with almost unlimited extended memory via SD card. The eXplorist 500 and 600 are also equipped with a TFT screen displaying maps at a high definition.
Sound good? We’ll let you make your own minds up on that one. For more information go to www.magellangps.com
