The liquid-repellent treatment ion-mask,
which is used by outdoors footwear specialist Hi-Tec has landed its seventh industry award
at the 2009 Company Clothing Awards.
Ion-mask was originally developed by the Ministry of Defence to protect
soldiers against chemical attack and is now used to create
liquid-repellent footwear. Judges honoured the MAGNUM Elite
Force 8.0 WPi, from MAGNUM’s world-first collection of
ion-mask™ protected uniform footwear in the Footwear
Innovation category.
Hi-Tec's new V-Lite Mt
Nevis WPI - fabric/suede boot with ion-mask
treatment = very breathable but also water repellent
ion-mask™ technology, from Oxford-based P2i, uses an
innovative and patented gas plasma process to permanently alter the
properties of treated materials at a molecular level. The plasma
treatment deposits a uniformly-applied, microscopically thin layer that
dramatically increases water and oil repellency so that liquids bead
and run off without leaving any trace.
The result is a protective shield that enhances comfort, repels water
and, crucially, does not affect look, feel and breathability of the
treated footwear.
Commenting on the award, Carl Francis, CEO of P2i said: “With
ion-mask™’s military heritage it seems fitting to
be winning an award for innovation in high performance footwear.
“The same technology that helps police, paramedics and
medical professionals keep their feet dry, cool, blister free and
protected, also confers the highest possible comfort and performance
for enthusiasts of the most demanding outdoor pursuits.”
