This week Richard's answered questions about 'the best boot', how to repair peeling seam seal tape on a waterproof jacket and whether you should use Comfort fabric conditioner to re-proof Gore-Tex clothing.


Q: 'My beloved Zamberlan boots have come to the end of their life after 15 years ... I was wondering what advances might have been made since then and whether there was an obvious best boot.'

A: 'Generally lightweight materials and composites, better cushioning and outsole materials and high tech manufacturing techniques like direct mid-sole injection have all made boots lighter and more effective over the last decade'

Q: 'What is the best way to re-proof Gore-Tex? I have heard that Comfort Pure is meant to work, but have also read elsewhere not to use fabric conditioner on waterproof items?'

A: 'When Trail Magazine tested Comfort fabric conditioner against dedicated water-repellant treatments from the likes of Grangers and Nikwax they found that it gave pretty good results and was massively cheaper per treatment. Silicone in the conditioner works as a water repellant... However...'

Q: 'How can I repair the taped seams on my waterproof jacket? They are all coming away, and it is now leaking quite badly!'

A: 'The name is Gear, Richard 'High Maintenance' Gear and believe me, I feel for your peeling seam tape, who wouldn't?

'You really have a choice here, either use a professional outdoor clothing repair specialist who should be able to reapply heat-activated seam-sealing tape to your clothing...'
