Chaco is apparently the number one sandal brand in the US, but it's also available over here and the Updraft Bulloo is the first of a new generation of lower profile Chaco models due out next year.
Chaco's UK importers tell us that the brand tops the US sales chart, but traditionally it's been slightly unappealing on this side of the Atlantic thanks to its resolutely brick-like construction and appearance - traditional Chaco sandals look like they've been hewn from slad of high-density black marble...
That's set to change next year with a new, lower-profile sole unit, but the current Updraft Bulloo which we have in for a look, is the first Chaco to feature a more streamlined construction. The sandal's still chunky, but in a good way. The LUVSEAT - really - footbed features an agressively built-up arch support and heel cup that you'll either like or not.
It'll appeal to fans of supportive aftermarket footbeds and we found it very comfortable in combination with a very cushioned mid-sole. Underneath there's a custom Vibram outsole unit, which seems to give pretty decent grip.
Adjust'em Strap
The other feature we like is that while the heel strap is fixed, the Adjust'em crossover forefoot strap is a single continuous loop of tape, so you can adjust tension to suit. There's diagram on the inside of the box with a suggested tightening and loosening sequence, but to be honest, it's pretty intuitive and we didn't even look at the pics before putting them on our feet.
At 370g per foot they're not particularly light, but they're quick-drying, supportive and decently comfortable when adjusted properly. Finally, they're don't look particularly chic or contemporary, but then not everyone wants their feet to be a fashion statement.
Suggested retail in the UK is £70 but we've seen them significantly cheaper online.
