Just In - EDZ Epic Trinity

Soft shell or windproof? It's made from Epic and looks like a decent all-round hill top.

Just in for review is a soft shell from online specialists EDZ in the shape of the Epic Trinity Jacket, a pull-over style smock with a short zip and a hood.

EDZ Trinity Jacket

The Trinty is made from Epic, an interesting fabric also used - in a different form - for Alpkit's water-resistant Jeanius jeans. Individual fibres in the fabric are encapsulated in waterproof silicone creating a fabric that's still very breathable, but is more or less windproof and also highly water resistant. More so than most windproofs in fact.

The smock weighs a claimed 230 grammes, so not ultralightweight, but still respectable and reminds us a little of Paramo's Fuera Smock being black, hooded and featuring a pouch pocket. It's cut a little slimmer however and is quite long with  generous droptail out back.

The fabric feels more substantial than ultra-lightweight windproofs, suggesting that it might make a good all-rounder for hill use. More once we've used it properly. Price is £85 more details from www.edz.biz

I don't think I will be swapping it for my Fuera.

Might fit me  - unlike a Fuera

I was lucky enough to win a Fuera Smock via the Paramo draw. I like the design but the cut is bizarre for a windproof. I'm pretty solid but there's enough room in the body & sleeves for me to put this on over a PHD Yukon without squashing the down! I'm trying to see this as a benefit... most of my windproofs are pretty close fitting (barring the baggy Montane Featherlite). But surely windproofs should be designed to go over a microfleece or baselayer at most. Even if a chap was a bit rotund, he'd have to be built like Bruto to fill out those sleeves. I'm sure I'll get plenty of use out of it but it'll be a flappy experience!

So I look with interest at this slimline clone. I've heard very mixed things about Epic though. Perhaps they've sorted out the quality control, but one industry insider I met said that the samples were extremely variable in terms of HH & breathability... and that it wasn't as breathable as most windproof fabrics.

That said, Wildthings Gear (a top end specialist brand in the States) has been selling Epic windshells for some time... so it can't be that bad.
